January 11, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

NEW YORK – The Arena Football League will honor the AFL High School Ironman of the Year during the weekend of the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be played Saturday, January 15 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Kickoff for the fifth annual game, which showcases the nation's top high school football talent in a classic East vs. West match-up, is set for 1 p.m. ET live on NBC.

The AFL High School Ironman of the Year Award is given to the best two-way high school player in the nation. The honor will be presented during the U.S. Army All-American Awards Dinner on Friday, January 14, along with the Army of One Award, which recognizes one U.S. Army All-American from both the East and West teams for his all-around commitment to community service, academics and athletics, and the annual National Player of the Year and National Coach of the Year awards.

JEFF BYERS, then a lineman at Loveland (CO) High School, was recognized as the AFL High School Ironman of the Year in 2004. Byers is currently a freshman center for the University of Southern California.

"We are honored to be associated with the U.S. Army and this prestigious All-Star event featuring the nation's best young men and tomorrow's pro football stars," said GLENN HORINE, President, AFL Properties.

Arena Football coaches and players will lead coaches and skills clinics held in conjunction with the event. Arena Football Hall of Fame coach DANNY WHITE, who directed the AFL's Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons including five ArenaBowl appearances, will serve as the guest speaker for the event's annual high school football coaches' clinic. Approximately 100 coaches from around the nation will be in attendance.

With AFL teams currently in training camp for the 2005 season, two arenafootball2 (af2) quarterbacks will step in to assist with the high school players' clinic. Manchester Wolves QB ROGER LINN (6-3, 200, Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings QB JUSTIN SIMMONS (5-11, 190, Texas A&M-Commerce) will be providing guidance on skill and technique during a passing drills clinic with the estimated 78 All-American Bowl game participants.

In keeping with the AFL's fan-friendly mission, the AFL will also be present at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl pregame fanfest.
