
AFL names players of the week

NEW YORK â Philadelphia Soul wide receiver/linebacker MARCUS KNIGHT, San Jose SaberCats wide receiver/defensive back RASHIED DAVIS and Orlando Predators defensive specialist KENNY MC ENTYRE have been named U.S. Army Ironman, Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 9 of the 2005 season. The announcement was made live on ESPNews this afternoon.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN: Knight (6-1, 192, Michigan), who is in his rookie season, led the Philadelphia Soul (4-5) over the Grand Rapids Rampage (1-7) in Saturday's 64-41 victory. On offense, Knight had 11 receptions for 142 yards and five receiving touchdowns. Defensively, he tallied 4.0 total tackles, a fumble recovery and forced a fumble, which led to his second touchdown reception. This marks the first time that the former Wolverine has earned an AFL weekly honor.
OFFENSIVE: Davis (5-10, 180, San Jose State) led the San Jose SaberCats (5-3) over the Las Vegas Gladiators (5-4) in Monday's 81-75 victory. On offense, Davis had 10 receptions for 163 yards and three receiving touchdowns. He also had five rushes for 10 yards and three rushing touchdowns. On special teams, the former Spartan returned four kicks for 129 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown return. Defensively, he tallied 1.0 total tackle and a pass breakup. Davis finished with seven total touchdowns and 302 all-purpose yards. This marks the second time â and second consecutive week â the third-year veteran has earned an AFL weekly honor.
ADT DEFENSIVE: McEntyre (5-11, 180, Kansas State) helped lead the Orlando Predators (6-3) to a 51-21 victory over the Austin Wranglers (3-6) on Friday. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year led the AFL's No. 1 scoring defense (42.0 PPG) by recording 7.0 total tackles, an interception, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. This marks the sixth time that the former Wildcat has earned an AFL weekly honor.
U.S. Army Ironman of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Randy Gatewood, Dallas' Will Pettis, Georgia's Derek Lee, Los Angeles' Kevin Ingram, New York's Chris Anthony, Orlando's Jerrain James and San Jose's Rashied Davis.
Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Joe Germaine, Colorado's Willis Marshall, Georgia's Troy Bergeron, Las Vegas' Marcus Nash and Clint Dolezel, Los Angeles' Lonnie Ford, New York's Aaron Garcia, Orlando's Joe Hamilton and Philadelphia's Tony Graziani.
ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Terrence Joseph, Colorado's Delvin Hughley, Columbus' Donvetis Franklin, Georgia's Kevin Gaines, Los Angeles' Greg Hopkins, New York's Corey Johnson, Philadelphia's Calvin Coleman and San Jose's Tremain Mack.
