AFL names players of the week

NEW YORK – Orlando Predators fullback/linebacker IDRIS PRICE, New Orleans VooDoo quarterback ANDY KELLY and Las Vegas fullback/linebacker FRANK CARTER have been named U.S. Army Ironman, Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 3 of the 2005 season. The announcement was made live on ESPNews this afternoon.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN: Price (6-2, 240, New Haven) led the Orlando Predators (3-0) in Friday's 61-46 Southern Division victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (2-1) for sole possession of first place. On offense, the former Charger tallied 13 yards on five rushes, including two touchdowns. Price had 5.0 tackles from his linebacker spot, including back-to-back quarterback sacks that swung momentum in the Predators favor in the third quarter. This marks the first time that the second-year veteran has earned an AFL weekly honor.

OFFENSIVE: Kelly (6-3, 220, Tennessee), who is in his 12th AFL season, earned Offensive Player of the Week honors by leading the New Orleans VooDoo (2-1) to a 62-61 victory over the defending champion San Jose SaberCats (1-2), on Sunday. Kelly completed 33-of-47 passes (70.2%) for 340 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Kelly hit OS AARON BAILEY with a 21-yard scoring strike with 26 seconds remaining for the deciding score. This marks the second consecutive and 10th time that the former Volunteer has earned an AFL weekly honor.

ADT DEFENSIVE: Carter (6-1, 260, MacMurray), who is in his fourth AFL season, helped lead the Las Vegas Gladiators (2-1) to a 41-37 victory over the New York Dragons (1-1) on Sunday. Carter recorded four solo tackles, including 3.0 sacks – all coming in the second quarter. This marks the first time that the former Highlander has earned an AFL weekly honor.

U.S. Army Ironman of the Week candidates included: Colorado's Kevin McKenzie, Dallas' Will Pettis, Georgia's Ricky Parker, Las Vegas' Frank Carter, Los Angeles' Remy Hamilton, New Orleans' Thabiti Davis and Philadelphia's Sean Scott.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Chicago's Henry Douglas, Columbus' Damien Groce, Georgia's Troy Bergeron, Las Vegas' Marcus Nash, Los Angeles' John Kaleo, New Orleans' Aaron Bailey, Orlando's Michael Brown and Philadelphia's Steve Smith.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Colorado's Rashad Floyd, Dallas' Bobby Perry, Georgia's Gillis Wilson, Los Angeles' Traco Rachal, New Orleans' B.J. Cohen, New York's Billy Parker, Orlando's Rupert Grant and Philadelphia's Arkee Thompson.
