AFL Announces Week One Awards

NEW YORK – Los Angeles Avengers quarterback TONY GRAZIANI, Tampa Bay Storm defensive specialist COREY SAWYER and Orlando Predators wide receiver/linebacker CORY FLEMING have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 1 of the 2003 season.

Graziani (6-3, 210, Oregon), a third-year AFL veteran, connected on 18-of-23 passes for 288 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. Five of his scoring strikes were delivered to offensive specialist CHRIS JACKSON. Graziani passed for a perfect game, registering a perfect rating of 158.3 as he led the Los Angeles Avengers to a 60-48 victory over the Las Vegas Gladiators on Sunday. This marks the first time that the former Duck has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Sawyer (5-10, 190, Florida State), a second-year defensive specialist, led the AFL's top defense by recording four total tackles and intercepting two passes in the Storm's 60-20 victory over the Carolina Cobras on Friday night. The Storm allowed a League-low 20 points and 163 yards. This marks the first time that the former Seminole has garnered an AFL weekly honor.

This is the second consecutive season that ADT Security Service has sponsored the AFL Defensive Player of the Week, Month and Year.

Fleming (6-2, 218, Tennessee), former All-Arena and 1997 Rookie of the Year, guided the Predators with a great two-way performance to a 47-35 victory over the Chicago Rush on Sunday. The former University of Tennessee star recorded six receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown, while recording a solo tackle and a pass breakup on defense. This marks the third time that the former Volunteer has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Colorado's Damian Harrell, Dallas' Jim Kubiak, Indiana's Raymond Philyaw, Los Angeles' Chris Jackson, Orlando's Jay Gruden, San Jose's Mark Grieb and Tampa Bay's Freddie Solomon.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Buffalo's Dwaine Carpenter, Dallas' Tom Briggs, Dallas' Kareem Larrimore and Georgia's Jermaine Smith.

Ironman of the Week candidates included: Colorado's Andre Cooper, Grand Rapids' Chris Ryan, Indiana's Leroy Thompson, Los Angeles' Greg Hopkins, New York's Mike Furrey, San Jose's Barry Wagner and Tampa Bay's Troy Wilson.
