SOUTH GEORGIA WILDCATS (2-0) AT ALABAMA STEELDOGS (0-1)
THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2007 - Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center (16,000) 8:00 P.M. ET
The undefeated Wildcats travel to Birmingham this week for a South Division affair against the Alabama Steeldogs, who are hosting their first home game of the new season. South Georgia (2-0) is attempting to win its third straight game to open the season. This will be the squad's first road game of 2007. Since the Wildcats move to Albany, Ga. from Fayetteville, N.C. (Cape Fear) prior to the 2005 season, the team hasn't put together a win streak of more than two games. In fact, a South Georgia victory would equal the team's win production from 2005 (3-13) and 2006 (3-13). The Wildcats are coming off an emotional, 77-53, home win against Louisville. In that contest, QB D. BRYANT, the newly-named Schutt Offensive Player of the Week, was sensational, tossing an af2 season-high nine touchdowns on 17-of-22 passing. His top target was WR JAMES ROBINSON, who caught eight passes for 194 yards and five scores. Bryant is currently tied for the league lead in touchdown passes with 13 and is also among the af2 leaders in passer rating, passing yards and completion percentage. Defensively, the squad forced two sacks, one interception, and forced and recovered three fumbles against the Fire. The unit is led by DL ED WANGLER (team-high 2.0 sacks) and DBs GREG GOLDEN (10.5 tackles, team-high 2 INTs) and JAMES HARRIS (team-high 11 tackles, 2 FF). The Steeldogs (0-1) enter this week's contest fresh off a bye week in Week 2. Alabama's first game of 2007 was a 44-27 road loss to Tennessee Valley. The Steeldogs struggled against the Vipers, recording only 127 yards of total offense. Starting QB ROBERT KENT looked in a rush all night thanks to constant pressure provided by Tennessee Valley, resulting in a sub-par showing from Alabama's signal caller. Kent completed just 14-of-34 passes for 95 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions (one returned for TD). Former AFL receiver MARKEITH COOPER led the Steeldogs with eight catches for 74 yards. On the bright side, Alabama allowed the Vipers only 169 yards of total offense. The Steelogs will need a better effort in all facets in order to stay with a suddenly surging South Georgia team.
