FLORIDA MAINTAINS TOP SPOT IN LATEST COACHES POLL: The Florida Firecats (2-0) received 463 points and 28 out of 30 first place votes to remain firmly in first place in the Week 3 Coaches Poll, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. The high-powered Firecats defeated the expansion Texas Copperheads on the road this past weekend, 54-13, to solidify their claim to the top spot for the third straight week. The Quad City Steamwheelers (2-0, 402 points, 2 first place votes) moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 on the strength of their impressive, 60-45, road win at Spokane, who entered Week 2 as the No. 2-ranked team. The Shock's first loss since June 10, 2006 (10-game win streak, including playoffs) and first home loss since May 6, 2006 (8-game win streak) knocked the team down to No. 8 this week. Tulsa, which was idle in Week 2, improved one position to No. 3 overall. South Georgia (2-0, No. 4, 325 points) and Central Valley (1-0, No. 5, 303 points) both moved up three spots each and into the Top 5 with impressive Week 2 home victories. Bossier-Shreveport (No. 10), Rio Grande Valley (No. 11) and Amarillo (No. 12) have entered the Top 16 this week as well after wins in Week 2.
BORBA, BRYANT, WALKER, BERGESKI EARN WEEK 2 HONORS: Central Valley wide receiver/linebacker WES BORBA, South Georgia quarterback D. BRYANT and Bossier-Shreveport wide receiver/defensive back KENDRICK WALKER have been named the U.S. Army Ironman, Schutt Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 2 of the 2007 season. In addition to these three awards, the af2 is also highlighting the player who makes the best catch of the week. The Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 2 goes to Amarillo wide receiver STEVE BERGESKI.
Borba (6-3, 215, St. Mary's College), in his fourth af2 season, was an impact player on both sides of the ball in the Coyotes' convincing, 74-31, season-opening home win against the Everett Hawks. Borba not only caught a touchdown pass and rushed for a touchdown, but also threw a touchdown pass as well, accomplishing a rare triple in football. His totals on the night included two rushes for 11 yards (5-yard TD run), five receptions for 31 yards (5-yard TD catch), and completed his only pass attempt to WR Jason Barnes for a 3-yard TD. Defensively, Borba was also a factor, recording 1.5 tackles and one fumble recovery. This is the first weekly af2 award of Borba's career. Bryant (6-3, 210, Duke) helped lead South Georgia to an impressive, 77-53, Week 2 home win against Louisville. The veteran signal caller, now in his fourth af2 season, was hotter than the Fire, completing 17-of-22 passes for 271 yards and an af2 season-high nine touchdowns with no interceptions. This is the second time Bryant has been named Offensive Player of the Week in his af2 career. His first award came in 2005 (Week 10) as a member of the Albany Conquest. Bryant is currently tied for the league lead in touchdown passes with 13 and is also among the af2 leaders in passer rating, passing yards and completion percentage. Walker (5-8, 175, Abilene Christian), a two-year af2 veteran, was a major player on defense in Week 2 for Bossier-Shreveport as the Battle Wings won their home opener, 67-52, against the expansion Fort Wayne Fusion. Walker had 5.0 total tackles (all solo) and an af2 season-high three interceptions (30 INT return yards). His stellar defensive effort also included three pass breakups. Walker's one-man show didn't end there, however. He showed the Fusion why he is appropriately nicknamed "Boss" with a 51-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown in the third quarter. This is the first weekly af2 award of Walker's career. Bergeski (6-2, 200, Central Connecticut), who is in his rookie season in the af2, earned the Cutters Catch of the Week Award for his diving 21-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter of the Dusters' impressive, 61-26, home opening win against Lubbock. Bergeski finished the night with eight catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns (all game-highs) in the first-ever af2 game.
SUCCESSFUL DEBUT FOR Q: This past Saturday the Quincy Carter era officially began in Bossier-Shreveport on a positive note. In his first action as an af2 signal caller, Carter completed 20-of-29 passes for 237 yards, six touchdowns and one interception as the host Battle Wings defeated the expansion Fort Wayne Fusion, 67-52. Bossier-Shreveport (1-0) returns to action this Saturday as they play host to the expansion Texas Copperheads (0-1). The 29-year-old Georgia native was a second round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2001 NFL draft, and earned the starting QB job for the Cowboys in 2003. Carter played in 15 games in the 2001 and 2002 seasons before his impressive 2003 campaign. That season Carter started all 16 games and led the Cowboys to the playoffs. In 2004, he played for the New York Jets. During his NFL career, which includes four seasons, Carter completed 542-of-960 passes for 6,337 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also rushed for 518 yards and three touchdowns. His ability, coupled with the experience and talent brought in by new Coach Jon Norris, should transform Bossier-Shreveport from a past pretender into a contender right away.
SUPRISING, BUT NOT SHOCKING: In one of Week 2's marquee matchups, the No.3-ranked Quad City Steamwheelers scored an impressive, 60-45, road win at Spokane, who entered Week 2 as the No. 2-ranked team. The Shock's loss was their first since June 10, 2006 (10-game win streak, including playoffs). It was also their first home loss since May 6, 2006 (8-game win streak). Spokane's 10 consecutive games won ties the team with three other teams for the fifth-best win streak in af2 history.
SOUTH GEORGIA'S EARLY SUCCESS: South Georgia (2-0) is attempting to win its third straight game to open the season on Thursday at South Division foe Alabama. Since the Wildcats move to Albany, Ga. from Fayetteville, N.C. (Cape Fear) prior to the 2005 season, the team hasn't put together a win streak of more than two games. In fact, a South Georgia victory would equal the team's win production from 2005 (3-13) and 2006 (3-13).
MCKINNEY TIES RUSH RECORD: Florida WR/KR CHRIS MCKINNEY tied an af2 record for the longest run from scrimmage with a 49-yard touchdown dash in the third quarter of the Firecats' 54-13 road win at Texas last Friday night. Bossier-Shreveport FB JASON SCHULE also had a long distance run in the Battle Wings' Week 2 win against Fort Wayne. Schule capped off Bossier-Shreveport's home opening win with a 45-yard touchdown run on the last play from scrimmage.
af2 IN THE AFL: The af2 has had hundreds of former players move up to the AFL over the years. A number of those players, such as Chicago DL E.J. BURT or Orlando QB SHANE STAFFORD, have become bonafide AFL stars. In 2007, a new group of AFL players with af2 roots are starting to shine. This week we highlight former Spokane DB ISAIAH TRUFANT and former Memphis WR/LB KENNY HIGGINS. Trufant (5-7, 160, Eastern Washington), in only his second AFL start, earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors on Tuesday for his individual efforts as the Kansas City Brigade (3-2) defeated the Las Vegas Gladiators (65-31) at the Orleans Arena this past Sunday. The former Shock standout and current AFL rookie recorded 4.5 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception and four passes defensed in the win. Trufant began the season on the practice squad and was signed to the active roster prior to Week 5. Higgins (6-1, 190, Toledo), who began the season on Nashville's practice squad, has emerged as one of the team's top weapons over the last four weeks. The former Xplorer receiver currently ranks second on the Kats in receptions (27), receiving yards (468) and receiving touchdowns (9).
