July 7, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

SOUTH GEORGIA WILDCATS (2-10) AT ALBANY CONQUEST (3-9)

FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2005 - PEPSI ARENA (13,901) 7:30 P.M. ET

It is the all-Albany matchup as the South Georgia Wildcats, who call Albany, Georgia home, travel to Albany, New York to face the Albany Conquest in a Friday night contest. The Conquest are still in the playoff picture but need to get some wins if they want to stay in the race. The Conquest have two main receivers in JEREMIAH POPE and MANWELL TALBERT. Pope leads the team in receptions with 83 while Talbert leads the team in touchdown receptions (22) and receiving yards (1,065). Talbert is also second on the team in sacks with two. CY BUTLER has 51 receptions for 481 yards and seven touchdowns to go with his three interceptions, tied for first on the Conquest. The South Georgia Wildcats are looking for their first win for new head coach DONNIE DAVIS. BRIAN ZBYDNIEWSKI has played well in his three games at starting quarterback for the Wildcats. On the season he is 82-of-146 for 1,046 yards and 14 touchdowns with two touchdowns. His Achilles' heel has been dealing with pressure, as he has been sacked ten times in just three games as the starter. South Georgia's last game marked the return of receiver ADRIAN COCKFIELD. In the Conquest-Wildcats previous meeting, Cockfield caught six passes for 64 yards and one touchdown. The Conquest won the previous contest by scoring 14 points in the final five minutes and coming back from a five-point deficit. In the final five-minute stretch Cy Butler had two interceptions to secure the game for the Conquest. This will be the final meeting between the two clubs this season.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PIONEERS (7-5) AT MANCHESTER WOLVES (10-2)

FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2005 - VERIZON WIRELESS ARENA (9,650) 7:30 P.M. ET

There are major playoff implications in Manchester as the Wolves host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. If the Wolves win and both Green Bay and Louisville lose then the Wolves would clinch the East Division. The Pioneers can clinch a playoff spot with a victory or losses by both Albany and Arkansas. This is the second and final meeting between these two clubs this season. Manchester won the earlier meeting 46-33 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. That was the end of a funk for the Pioneers in which they lost four of five games. After the loss to Manchester, they have won three of four contests. In the previous meeting JAKE EATON found J.J. MCKELVEY ten times for 131 yards and four touchdowns. Since that game, veteran BRYAN SNYDER has taken over the starting quarterback position for the Pioneers. In five games he has thrown for 699 yards and 16 touchdowns on 58-of-97 passing with four interceptions. The Pioneers will still be without the services of last season's Rookie of the Year, J.R. THOMAS. The Pioneers have gone an impressive 3-1 without Thomas but the Pioneers would certainly like him back. Manchester has had two weeks to think about only their second loss of the season, at home to Quad City 41-39. They had possession with under a minute remaining but couldn't move the ball and had to settle for a 46-yard field goal attempt which was no good. The loss ended the Wolves' ten-game winning streak. Eaton and McKelvey make up one of the best offensive duos while ALLISTAIR SEBASTIEN and WILLIAM HAITH make up one of the best defensive specialist duos in the league. Haith leads the league in tackles and will likely register his 100th tackle this week. Sebastien leads the team in interceptions with six.
