April 10, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
MOHEGAN WOLVES (1-0) AT WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PIONEERS (0-1) FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2003 - FIRST UNION ARENA (7,955) 7:00 P.M. ET
The Mohegan Wolves, coached by MARK STOUTE, try to go 2-0 this week when they head to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to tangle with the division rival Pioneers. The Pioneers, led by head coach DEAN COKINOS, will look to improve on their 25-point showing in Week 2. QB CHRIS BODEN used five different receivers in the game at Greensboro, but threw to no one more than OS GARY OPIO, who had seven catches for 75 yards and a score. Opio also gained 75 yards on seven kick returns. Wolves QB ROB HARDING, who shared time with QB RYAN TRACEY last week, completed 9-of-13 for 131 yards and three scores, connecting with KAZMELL MINOTT for two of those scores. The Wolves defense debuted strong, as three different Wolves recorded sacks, including 2002 Built Ford Tough Man of the Year JEFF COGELL. SEBASTIEN ALLISTAIR and ANDRE WEATHERS contributed with two inceptions in the win over Rochester. The Pioneers have won each game in this series. This is the first of three meetings between the clubs this season.
RICHMOND SPEED (0-1) AT ALBANY CONQUEST (1-0) FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2003 - PESPSI ARENA (13,901) 7:30 P.M. ET
The Richmond Speed, led by fourth year head coach RICHARD DAVIS, head to Albany for the second of a back-to-back series with rival Albany. The Conquest, coached by PETE COSTANZA, took the first game last week when ELIJAH BEAMON, ADT Defensive Player of the Week, intercepted a JOEL GORDON pass with under a minute left and ran into the endzone for a touchdown. This week the Speed has picked up QB WES COUNTS via a trade with Memphis, and Counts should see some time under center in Albany. JEFF TOWNSLEY continues to serve as a major weapon for the Speed, catching six passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns last week. Conquest QB RYAN VENA only threw one touchdown last week, but rushed for three more. Last week's hero, Beamon, also leads the club in tackles (7.0). Known for their close games, the Speed and Conquest have never had a game decided by more than a touchdown. This is the final regular season meeting between the teams this year.
GREENSBORO PROWLERS (1-0) AT MACON KNIGHTS (1-0) FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2003 - MACON COLISEUM (7,182) 7:30 P.M. ET
The Greensboro Prowlers take their 1-0 record on the road to Macon to face the Knights Friday evening. The Prowlers have only won one road game in the team's three-year history. The Knights, led by fourth year coach KEVIN PORTER, are 12-4 all-time at home. Last week, Prowlers back-up QB KENTON EVANS provided a glimpse of how potent the Prowlers' offense can be, completing 11-of-19 for 171 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Two of those went to CLIFTON SHAVERS, who had four total catches for 85 yards including a 37-yard scoring strike. The Knights cruised last week behind the arm of QB SEAN PETERSON, who went 14-for-19 for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Macon also got a solid Ironman effort from MIACAH COOPER. Cooper scored one offensive and one defensive touchdown for the Knights in the win over Green Bay. Both clubs defenses allowed only 25 points last week. This is the second meeting between the Prowlers and Knights with Macon winning the first contest 62-34 on April 14, 2001.
QUAD CITY STEAMWHEELERS (0-1) AT TENNESSEE VALLEY VIPERS (1-0) FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2003 - VON BRAUN CENTER (6,624) 8:30 P.M. ET
Quad City visits Huntsville, AL for a re-match of the 2000 ArenaCup against the Tennessee Valley Vipers. One of the longest rivalries in af2 history, the 'Wheelers and Vipers have met five times in the regular season, with Quad City holding a 4-1 edge. The lone loss came in Huntsville in June of last year. Head coach RICH INGOLD, in his second season with the Steamwheelers, got a strong performance from QB TONY ZIMMERMAM last week. After missing the second half of last season with a broken leg, Zimmerman returned to form against the Hawaiian Islanders, completing 21-of-38 for 265 yards with three scoring strikes to RANDELL LANE and two to TIM DODGE. QB MATT SAUK threw five touchdowns in his return to the Vipers last week, completing 20-of-36 against the Florida Firecats. Former 'Wheeler caught three passes for 24 yards last week in Florida, but figures to serve a bigger role against his old mates this week. REGGIE WORTHY needs two rushing yards for 200 and 20 receiving yards for 1,000 in his career. He would become the first Viper and only the third player in af2 history to eclipse the 200/1,000 plateau.
BOSSIER CITY BATTLE WINGS (1-0) AT BIRMINGHAM STEELDOGS (1-0) FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2003 - BIRMINGHAM-JEFFERSON CIVIC CENTER (15,000) 8:30 P.M. ET
Two high-powered offenses face-off in Birmingham on Friday night when the Bossier City Battle Wings meet the Birmingham Steeldogs. The Battle Wings, coached by CHAD CARLSON, are led offensively by QB SHERARD POTEETE. Poteete earned Week 2 Offensive Player of the Week for his eight touchdown (four in the air, four on the ground) effort against the defending champion Pirates. Two of Poteete's passing touchdowns went to PAUL HACKITT, who caught eight total passes for 116 yards. The Steeldogs, led by fourth year head coach BOBBY HUMPHREY, hope JEFF AARON and ARYVIA HOLMES can counter. The duo connected nine times for 115 yards and three touchdowns last week versus Cincinnati. This is the third meeting for these two teams, with Birmingham winning the previous two.
