Reading Fightin Phils News Release
READING, Pa.---The Akron Aeros rattled four runs off Reading Fightin Phils reliever Brody Colvin in the eighth inning for a 7-5 win at FirstEnergy Stadium Friday night.
After a productive start from starter Jesse Biddle, Reading headed into the eighth inning trailing Akron, 3-2. Colvin took the hill to start the eighth inning, but the reliever didn't find much luck in his third relief appearance of the season. He began the inning by allowing the first three Aeros hitters to reach base, highlighted by a Roberto Perez double and Giovanny Urshela RBI single. Following Quincy Latimore's pop out to second base, Ronny Rodriguez slammed a three-run home run to increase the Aeros lead.
Colvin exited the game after dealing a walk to Nate Spears and surrendering a single to Tyler Holt. Fightins newcomer Luis Garcia came on in relief of him and proceeded to pitch 1 1/3 perfect innings where he struck out three and threw 11 of his 16 pitches for strikes.
Reading attempted to climb back from the five-run deficit in the bottom half of the inning when center fielder Tyson Gillies blasted his second home run of the evening to lead off the inning. The Baseballtown veteran hit his first home run in the third inning. He now has four home runs with Reading this season, equaling his 2012 total with the club.
Gillies' shot was succeeded by a Cameron Rupp RBI single that plated Tyler Henson. Henson got on base earlier in the inning after knocking in his second double of the night. He finished by going 3-for-3 with a walk.
Derrick Mitchell continued the team's rally in the ninth inning with a solo home run, but the Fightins couldn't string anything together and dropped their second game in a row.
Along with Mitchell and Gillies, Albert Cartwright hit a two-out solo home run in the fifth. The Fightins' four home runs extend their Eastern League-leading total to 50 through 52 games this season.
Top Phillies prospect Biddle gave up three earned runs on seven hits and three walks in his fifth losing decision of the season. He struck out six batters and threw 102 pitches, 68 of which were strikes.
RHP Hector Neris (3-1, 4.14 ERA) will start for the Fightin Phils on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. in the second game of the team's three-game tilt versus the Aeros. Starting for Akron will be RHP Brett Brach (1-2, 4.91 ERA). Tune into Oldies 1340 WRAW-AM or MiLB.TV for the game broadcast with Fightins play-by-play announcer Anthony Oppermann starting at 6:05 p.m.
Fightins Fillers: Tyson Gillies last hit two home runs in a game on July 5, 2009 when he played with High Desert (A). He became the first Reading hitter to slug two or more home runs in a game since Cody Asche did so on August 21 last season vs. Harrisburg...After going 12-11 in April, Reading concluded the month of May by going 8-21...
The Fightin Phils continue their 47th season affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, June 1 at 6:35 p.m. when the team takes on the Akron Aeros.
