Aeros centerman Mark Cullen has helped raise $550 for "Sunshine Kids", which helps children struck with cancer and their families. An anonymous donor is giving $100 per Cullen goal and $50 per assist to the organization. Houston is 8-for-25 (32.0 percent) with the man advantage in the last seven home games, including three games with more than one power play goal.
Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist is 6-3-1 with a sparkling 1.49 goals against average and two shutouts in 10 career games versus Utah. This season, he is 4-3-0 with a 1.59 goals against average and a shutout.
Utah's minus-31 third-period margin (82-51) trails only Albany's minus-35 for the worst in the AHL. The Grizzlies are just minus-three in the first period (53-50), but in the last two periods (plus overtime), Utah has been outscored 154-91.
Utah goalie Jason Bacashihua sports a 12-19-4 mark this season. In his 23 non-wins, the Grizzlies haven't once scored more than two goals.

Tonight: Utah at Houston
Last game â Defenseman Kevin Mitchell scored twice in a four-goal second period for his first career two-goal game in his 211th professional contest, as the Houston Aeros held on to beat the Norfolk Admirals 5-3 at The Scope to win the finale of their four-game road trip. Christoph Brandner and red-hot Jeff Hoggan also had goals in the second, and Mark Cullen's two assists raised another $100 ($550 total) for Sunshine Kids. Johan Holmqvist made 28 saves for Houston, which had scored just five goals in going 0-2-0-1 in the first three games of the road trip. Ajay Baines, Brandin Cote and Igor Radulov each scored and Craig Anderson turned aside 18 shots over 40 minutes for Norfolk, which led 1-0 after one but trailed 4-1 just 20 minutes later.
Scouting the Aeros â Houston, 6-3-1-1 in its last 11, hopes to continue its march towards a Calder Cup playoff spot tonight against the Grizzlies. The Aeros are still playing without leading scorer Stephane Veilleux (12+26=38), who was recalled to Minnesota February 27. Rickard Wallin (14+17=31) and defenseman Zbynek Michalek (5+14=19) have since joined Veilleux with the Wild. Defenseman Travis Roche (7+29=36) is the active team leader in points, one up on Kyle Wanvig (22+13=35) and four ahead of Dan Cavanaugh (12+20=32). Last season's Calder Cup Most Valuable Player, goalie Johan Holmqvist, has played 57 of the team's first 72 games, going 22-27-6 with a 2.57 goals against average and three shutouts. Kyle Kettles is 3-7-5 with a 2.59 goals against average but has deserved a better fate. In 14 starts, the Aeros have scored 24 goals in front of the rookie netminder.
Scouting the Grizzlies â Utah has gone 2-1-1-0 in its last four following a three-game losing streak to keep its post-season hopes alive. Utah has 58 points, tied with San Antonio for sixth place, two points behind Cincinnati for the final playoff spot in the West. The Grizzlies earned three tough points over the weekend, winning 5-2 in Chicago Saturday, then tying Cincinnati 2-2 on Sunday. Utah rallied from two goals down against the Ducks, and Mathias Tjarnqvist's goal early in the third period gave Utah the much-needed point. The Grizzlies are led by Jarrod Skalde's 51 points (22+29=51). His teammates are chipping in more lately; Skalde has more than twice the number of points as the Grizzlies' second leading scorer for much of the season. Now, David Gove (11+19=30) and former Aero Rob Valicevic (9+21=30) have 30 points apiece. Utah's blueline is anchored by Dan Jancevski (5+14=19), who started the All Star Game in February. Jason Bacashihua has been the go-to man in net since Mike Smith's season-ending injury. He's 12-19-4 with a 2.65 goals against average and three shutouts. Backup Dan Ellis is 3-10-0 with a 2.94 goals against average. He's 2-10-0 since a shutout in his first AHL start.
Aeros/Grizzlies connections
Utah's Rob Valicevic was an Aero for three seasons, from 1996-1999. Valicevic totaled 129 points (56g, 73a) in 187 games with the team.
Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist played with Utah's Barrett Heisten in 2001-02 in Hartford. Heisten was Michael Schutte's teammate at the University of Maine in 1999-2000.
Houston enforcer Derek Boogaard and Utah's Tim Wedderburn and Justin Cox were teammates for two seasons, 1999-2000 and 2000-01 in WHL Prince George.
Utah's Brett Draney played with Houston's Kyle Kettles in Medicine Hat for the 2000-01 season, plus five games in the 2001-02 campaign before Kettles was traded to Moose Jaw. Kettles and David Bararuk were teammates in 2001-02 in Moose Jaw.
Grizzlies goalie Dan Ellis played with Houston's Jeff Hoggan at Nebraska-Omaha.
Utah's Nick Naumenko was Jan Vodrazka's teammate in Kansas City in 1999-2000. Naumenko also played for Aeros head coach Todd McLellan in Cleveland in 2000-01. Naumenko and Travis Roche both went to the University of North Dakota, but not together.
And down the stretch they come â Houston will play eight games over the final three weeks of the season, including four big matchups in six days this week. Each of the Aeros' eight remaining games is against the West Division. Houston is 18-23-8-2 against the West this season, including an 8-9-2-1 mark in February, when the Aeros played all 20 of their games against their own division.
Aeros look for two straight â
Houston, coming off a 5-3 win in Norfolk on Sunday, is 6-3-1-1 over its last 11 games.
Houston has 11 wins in its last 40 games (11-18-9-2) and is a game above the .500 mark the last 50 games (20-19-9-2).
The Aeros' 13-game winless streak (0-5-7-1) December 27-January 23 was five more than their previous franchise record eight-game streak (0-6-1-1), November 20-December 3 of this season.
Houston ran off a season-high seven straight games without a loss (3-0-4-0) December 20-January 2, including four straight ties December 27-January 2.
The Aeros won six straight December 5-17, outscoring their opponents 18-6 in the process.
In the season's first 20 games, Houston allowed a league-worst 3.40 goals per game. In the last 52 games, the Aeros have yielded just 2.52 goals per game. The defensive streak has helped Houston move out of the basement to 2.75 goals against per game, 18th in the AHL.
Home cookin' â
The Aeros have won three straight at home, halfway to their season high, and have also won seven of 10 at home since falling 3-1 to Cincinnati January 27. Houston plays six of its final eight games at home, including five against teams chasing the Aeros in the playoff race.
The Aeros are averaging 3.29 goals per game over the last seven home games, in which they are 5-2-0-0.
Houston started off its first season in Toyota Center just 2-6-1-1 but has improved to 16-11-5-2 at its new home. In the last 24 Toyota Center games, the Aeros have only five regulation losses and are 14-5-4-1.
Houston's season-best, nine-game home unbeaten streak was snapped January 8 in a 1-0 overtime loss to Hartford.
"O" exploding â
The Aeros are averaging 3.00 goals per game in the last 14 games to improve to 2.42 goals per game, tied for 18th in the AHL.
The Aeros have scored five goals in four of their last 10 games.
Houston has been held to two goals or fewer in 27 of the last 43 games (62.8 percent), including a scoreless streak of 178 minutes, 52 seconds that included back-to-back shutouts January 8-9.
Houston has scored two goals or less in 43 of 72 games (59.7 percent) this season.
Aeros, Ducks, Rampage, Grizzlies in a playoff dog-fight â Fourth-place Houston has 65 points, five more than Cincinnati and seven better than San Antonio and Utah in the West Division. Cincinnati, which has three games in hand on the Aeros, is in Grand Rapids tomorrow, then plays host to Chicago Friday and Cleveland Saturday, before traveling to San Antonio Sunday. San Antonio, which has six games in hand on Houston, plays host to red-hot Milwaukee tonight, then opens up a critical home and home with the Aeros Friday at SBC Center before finishing off the week Sunday at home versus Cincinnati. Utah, which along with Houston has played 72 games, plays host to Grand Rapids Friday and Saturday. The top five teams in the West make the playoffs, with the fourth- and fifth-place team playing a three-game qualifying series at the higher seed. Home ice will be important, since the four teams chasing the final two playoff spots are a combined 43 games under .500 on the road.

Hoggan tearing it up â
Aeros right winger Jeff Hoggan has a goal in each of his last three games to establish a new career high. Hoggan has added two assists in the three-game point streak, which has tied two other spans this season for his career-best.
The rugged winger has 31 points (17+14=31), and his 17 goals are second on the team. In his rookie season in 2002-03, Hoggan totaled just 11 points (6+5=11).
In his last 14 games, Hoggan has posted a negative plus-minus rating just once, and he is plus-12 in that span to move to plus-one on the season.
Hoggan is tied for second on the team with three game-winning goals, including the important tally in two of the last four victories.
The Aeros are 15-5-4-2 when Hoggan notches a point and 8-5-2-2 when he scores a goal.
Wanvig reaches 20-goal mark â Aeros right wing Kyle Wanvig has gotten to the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his pro career. Wanvig, who scored his 20th February 28 against San Antonio, picked up No. 22 March 17 against Worcester. Wanvig has 36 total points between Houston and Minnesota, and 35 alone with the Aeros (22+13=35). Wanvig's previous career-high for goals was 14 combined (13 with Houston) last season, when he had 30 points, 29 with the Aeros.
Holmqvist snaps three-game skid â
Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist made 28 saves Sunday in the team's 5-3 win over Norfolk, snapping a personal three-game losing streak. Holmqvist moved to 5-3-0 in his last eight starts. Holmqvist has six wins (6-9-1) in his last 16 games, but the Aeros have scored just 16 goals in those 10 non-wins (1.60 gpg).
Holmqvist, the 2003 Butterfield Trophy winner as Calder Cup Playoffs MVP, sports a 27-30-6 mark with Houston.
A noted late- and post-season performer, Holmqvist's 20 March wins are his most of any month.
Holmqvist's current 2.57 goals against average is a career best.
Holmqvist went 6-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average and a .963 save percentage during a six-game winning streak December 5-17. The six-game winning streak set a new career-high.
The Aeros' netminder had a shutout streak of 189 minutes, seven seconds snapped December 17, just missing Frederic Chabot's 1996 team record mark of 193 minutes, 37 seconds.
In his 22 wins this season, Holmqvist is allowing 1.09 goals per game and sports a .960 save percentage. In his 35 non-wins, Holmqvist has a 3.53 goals against average and a .874 save percentage.
Holmqvist leads the AHL in minutes played (3,342), is fourth in saves (1,401) and is tied for third in wins (22).
Holmqvist has played in 57 games. Arguably the most durable AHL goalie in recent memory, Holmqvist is the only goalie to play 43 or more AHL games in each of the past four seasons.
Kettles wins a big one â
Rookie goalie Kyle Kettles snapped an eight appearance winless streak (0-3-5) by making 26 saves in a 5-2 win in San Antonio February 27. Kettles made a season-best 34 saves March 5 but fell 3-1 to Grand Rapids.
Kettles was 2-0-4 with a 0.95 goals against average and a .960 save percentage in six starts from December 23-January 17, dropping his goals against average from 3.65 to 2.19.
The netminder picked up his first AHL shutout by making 20 saves in a January 9 game versus Worcester. Unfortunately for Kettles, his team didn't score either and he had to settle for a tie.
The Aeros scored just 12 goals in his first 10 games this season, but they have 12 goals in his last four starts.
Mitchell gets first two-goal game â
Defenseman Kevin Mitchell not only notched his first career two-goal game in 211 professional contests Sunday, he also picked up the Aeros' first two-goal game by a blueliner all season.
Mitchell 21 points (5+16=21) with the Aeros, and 13 of those points have come on the power play. Last season with ECHL Louisiana, Mitchell had 23 of his 34 points with the man advantage.
Mitchell has 23 career goals counting his ECHL totals, and an eye-popping 17 have come on the power play. Six of Mitchell's eight AHL goals have come with the man advantage.
Mitchell had points in five straight games (1+5=6) for the first time in his AHL career January 23-31.
Mitchell's five-game assist streak was an Aeros season-high by two games.
The blueliner has eight points (3+5=8) over the last 10 games and 18 points (5+13=18) in the last 26 games.
Holmqvist 6-3-1 against Grizzlies â Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist is 6-3-1 with a sparkling 1.49 goals against average and two shutouts in 10 career games versus Utah. This season, he is 4-3-0 with a 1.59 goals against average and a shutout against the Grizzlies. Kyle Kettles has split two games with the Grizzlies this season, impressively making 26 saves in a 2-1 Aeros' win in Utah on December 23.
Grizzlies goalies a combined 3-7-0 against Houston â Utah goalie Dan Ellis has lost both starts against the Aeros in this, his rookie season, with a 2.56 goals against average. Jason Bacashihua is 3-5-0 with a 3.13 goals against average in eight career appearances against the Aeros. This season, Bacashihua is 2-2-0 with a 3.06 goals against average.
Heid a rookie coming into his own â Coaches will tell you that this late in the season, rookies are rookies no more. That's the case with Aeros defenseman Chris Heid, who has a goal and three assists in the last six games. Overall in the last eight games, Heid sports a plus-seven rating. Heid assisted on Jeff Hoggan's game-winning goal March 12 versus San Antonio.
The youth shall lead them â Houston's "kids" are leading the way in 2003-04. Through 72 games, nearly half of the Aeros' scoring has come from players in their first or second year in the North American pro game. Of Houston's 471 scoring points, 235 (49.9 percent) have come from players in either their first or second season in North America, while 235 (49.9 percent) have come from players born in 1980 or after. Five of the team's eight top scorers were born during the Reagan administration.
Career highs all around â You'd be hard pressed to find an Aero who hasn't set at least one AHL career-high in 2003-04. Among them: Johan Holmqvist (57 games played, 3342 minutes, 2.57 goals against average); Erik Reitz (17 assists, 21 points); Zbynek Michalek (5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points); Marc Cavosie (9 goals, 19 assists, 28 points); Dan Cavanaugh (20 assists, 32 points); Kevin Mitchell (5 goals, 16 assists, 21 points); Jeff Hoggan (17 goals, 14 assists, 31 points); Stephane Veilleux (13 goals tie career high, 25 assists, 38 points); Kyle Wanvig (22 goals, 35 points); Jason Beckett (142 PIM's).
Aeros still winless in OT â The Aeros, winless at 0-4-11 in overtime, have played just three extra sessions since needing overtime in eight of 10 games from December 27-January 17. Houston is the lone AHL team without an overtime win after Utah won twice in late February in the extra session, and just one team (Cleveland) has only one overtime win. The last teams to go through a season without an overtime win were Hamilton and Hartford last season. The Aeros went 8-3-7 in overtime in 2002-03, second in the league in extra session wins (Chicago, 11). The Aeros' 11 ties are still seven short of the AHL/overtime era record, set in 1997-98 by St. John's. Grand Rapids (6-0-8) and San Antonio (7-0-8) are without a loss in overtime this season.
Aeros' first goal streak snapped â Houston had scored the game's first goal in eight straight games to set a season-high, but the streak was ended Saturday. The Aeros have now allowed the game's first goal the last two games. Houston is 19-8-5-2 overall when scoring first.
But when not scoring first... - The Aeros are 6-24-5-2 when allowing the game's first goal and picked up their first road win in such situations (1-16-4-0) Sunday. The game marked the first time all season Houston has trailed on the road at any point in a game and emerged victorious.
Houston has four wins when allowing more than one goal - The Aeros are an unbeaten in regulation 21-0-3-1 when allowing one or zero goals this season, and they have four wins (4-32-8-3) when yielding two or more.
Not comeback artists â Houston is one of four AHL teams without a win when trailing after two periods (0-26-6-1). The Aeros became the last team to record a win when trailing after one period (1-22-2-2) when they rallied for a 5-3 win Sunday in Norfolk. Last season, the Aeros were second in the AHL with six wins when trailing after two periods. Grand Rapids led the circuit with seven.
Penalty kill update â
The Aeros' overall 85.6 percent penalty kill rate (280-327) is 14th in the AHL, after spending much of season in the upper half of the top 10.
Houston killed off its first 31 shorthanded chances this season. Since then, opponents are 47-for-296 (15.9 percent) on the power play.
Opponents are 12-for-61 (19.7 percent) on the power play over the last 14 games and have scored 18 man-advantage goals in the last 21 games.
Houston has allowed a power play goal in five of its last six home games.
The Aeros have yielded no power play goals in 37 of their 72 games, and have points in all but nine of those games (15-9-9-4).
Utah is ranked 27th in the AHL on the power play at 10.4 percent, and the Grizzlies are 26th on the road (10.6 percent). The league record for lowest power play percentage is 10.36 percent, set by Rochester in 2001-02.
The Grizzlies are 3-for-28 (10.7 percent) on the power play over their last seven games, although all three of those goals have come in the last three contests (3-for-17, 17.6 percent).
Utah is 4-for-32 (12.5 percent) with the man advantage versus the Aeros, with four different players having one goal. In the last three meetings, the Grizzlies are 0-for-10.
Power play update â
Houston enters tonight's game 50 of 397 on the power play (12.6 percent), tied for 21st among 28 AHL teams.
The Aeros have gone 37-for-254 (14.6 percent) since Matt Foy snapped a streak of 37 straight unsuccessful power plays December 5, raising their percentage from a season-low 8.3 to 12.6.
The Aeros are 2-for-23 (8.7 percent) on the power play over their last five games.
Houston is 8-for-25 (32.0 percent) with the man advantage in the last seven home games, including three games with more than one power play goal.
Houston's 397 power plays are the most in the AHL, 13 more than second-place Manitoba. The Aeros also led the league in 2002-03 with 514 chances.
The Aeros have only six wins in 36 games (6-22-7-1) when not scoring a power-play goal.
Utah is tied for 11th in the AHL on the penalty kill at 86.2 percent, and the Grizzlies rank 14th on the road (84.9 percent).
The Grizzlies have allowed six power play goals on just 21 chances (71.4 percent rage) over their last three games, including a 4-for-9 performance by Milwaukee last Friday.
Houston is 6-for-53 (11.3 percent) on the power play against Utah this season. Six different Aeros have a goal.
