TORONTO, Monday, November 21, 2005 (CHL) - The ADT Canada/Russia Challenge will be played under International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rules. A number of variations exist between those used by the IIHF and those applied by the Canadian Hockey League.
Thus, the following CHL rules will not be in effect for the ADT Canada/Russia Series:
CHL standard on Interference, Hooking and Holding
Goaltenders' limitations on puck handling behind the net (trapezoid area)
Automatic penalty for shooting the puck out of play from the defensive zone
Not permitting line changes following icing situations
Also, in regards to penalties, there will be an automatic misconduct assessed with the minor penalty for checks from behind. A match penalty will be announced as a penalty for fighting. An automatic misconduct will be assessed with any double-minor for butt ending and spearing. An automatic game misconduct will be assessed for any fighting majors - the players will be ejected. However, if a player is deemed to be the instigator of the fight, then only the instigator will be ejected from the game. Finally, icing will not be called when the puck passes through the goaltenders' crease.
As for overtime, if the game is tied after regulation time, a shootout will be held, with five players from each team shooting in the first round. If the score is still tied after all 10 players have shot in the first round, one player from each team will shoot until the tie is broken. All other regular CHL shootout rules apply.
