Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI-Pekka Rinne made 36 saves, including 29 in the last two periods, and Darren Haydar scored his league-leading 15th goal of the post season as the Admirals took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Calder Cup Finals. Game two of the series will be back at the Bradley Center on Saturday night at 7:00 pm.
The Admirals jumped out to a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes of play thanks to goals by Scottie Upshall and Haydar. Just over three minutes into the game, Upshall and Rich Peverley came into the Hershey zone one a two-on-one rush. Peverley drew Bears' goalie Fredric Cassivi out of the net, but his shot it the post, however Upshall pounced on the rebound and it was 1-0 Milwaukee.
Haydar got his marker at the 16:50 mark of the period. The Milton, ONT native fired a shot from the right point that snuck by Cassivi while Simon Gamache screened the Hershey backstop. Libor Pivko and Greg Classen assisted on the goal.
The second period didn't see any scoring and neither team was able to generate many quality chances. Hershey outshot the Admirals 15-11 during a second stanza that saw just one penalty whistled, an Upshall hooking call, after eight infractions were called in the first.
Hershey finally got on the board at 16:54 of the third period when Tomas Fleischmann sent a shot on net that was tipped in front of Rinne by Lawrence Nycholat and went over the netminder's glove. Former Admiral Kris Beech also assisted on the play.
The Bears continued to apply heavy pressure the rest of the game and pulled Cassivi with 80 seconds left in the game in favor of an extra attacker, but they couldn't put another chink in Rinne's armor. Hershey Defenseman Mike Green fired one last desperation attempt with two seconds to go, but the puck trickled to the side of the Milwaukee net.
