ST. JOHN'S, NL - John Gibson made 42 saves and Nic Kerdiles scored twice, as the Norfolk Admirals defeated the St. John's IceCaps 3-1 Tuesday night at Mile One Centre to take Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series.
John Kurtz had the game-winner for the Admirals. Andrew Gordon scored the lone goal for the IceCaps, while Michael Hutchinson stopped 23-of-25 shots in a losing effort.
The Admirals struck first in the opening frame, on a goal from Kerdiles at 10:14. Skating into the circle, Kerdiles took the corner feed from Andre Petersson before one-timing it blocker side past Hutchinson to make it 1-0.
After a scoreless second period, Gordon scored the equalizer 3:20 into the third. Getting a piece of Josh Morrissey's shot from the point, Gordon tipped it past Gibson to tie things up at a goal apiece.
Norfolk restored their lead at the seven-minute mark, however, when they stormed the crease to follow up on a rebound as Kurtz banged it home to make it 2-1.
Then, with Hutchinson pulled for the extra attacker, Kerdiles scored the empty netter with 14 seconds remaining to seal the deal for Norfolk.
