August 17, 2005 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

SAN DIEGO, CALIF August 17, 2005- Adam Johnson, San Diego Surf Dawgs right hander, was sold to the Oakland A's AAA affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats on Tuesday 8/16. Adam is expected to start tonight for Sacramento, who will play the Tucson Sidewinders.

"Adam has complete control of four pitches and has been just about unhittable since he joined us" said Terry Kennedy, San Diego Surf Dawgs Manager. "This kid is going to have tremendous success in the A's organization and should be back in a big league uniform soon. It's always tough to lose a top starter, but I couldn't be happier for Adam as this is what our league is all about."

Johnson stared at Cal-State Fullerton and then was picked second overall by the Minnesota Twins in the 2000 MLB draft. Adam eventually made two short stints with the Twins major league club in 2001 and 2003, posting a 1-3 record to go along with a 10.25 ERA. Johnson was released from the Twins AAA club in Rochester last year. He pitched two innings for the Arizona Diamondbacks this year in spring training, later to be released and then picked right up by the San Diego Surf Dawgs.

The Torrey Pines High School product is leaving the GBL with an 8-1 record and the second best ERA at 2.58. In 76 2/3 innings Johnson struck out 87 batters and walked only 27. He was named to the inaugural GBL All-Star team, has been named California Pitcher of the Week three times and was the first pitcher ever to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks.

"Adam is the 11th alumni of the GBL to go to a major league organization and the first selected for a AAA roster spot," said Kevin Outcalt, Commissioner of the GBL. "We are very pleased that our players are receiving these opportunities and that the GBL is being increasingly recognized as a talent pool for MLB teams."

Seats at Tony Gwynn Stadium are $6 for General Admission, $8 for Upper Reserve and $10 for Lower Reserve. Ticket Packages start as low as $30. For more information please contact Joe McMackin, Director of Ticket Sales at call (619) 282-HITS (4487) or email JMcMackin@goldenbaseball.com.
