Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The Anchorage Aces pro hockey club was recognized twice this week by the Anchorage community for its contributions throughout the 2002-03 school year.
Monday, the organization was invited to attend the Star Awards at the 4th Avenue Theatre in downtown Anchorage. The Star Awards recognize the outstanding Anchorage School Business Partnerships in the city and are supported by the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce. The Aces were honored for their creation of the "Skate Into Reading" program that began in 2000 and this year found its way into 15 different elementary schools in the area, thanks to the coordinating efforts of Diane Johnson, Director of Community Relations. Lindsay Henry, principal of Tudor Elementary, one of the Aces' most consistent partners, was on hand to accept the award along with Johnson and vice principal Michelle Prince.
The Cook Inlet Literacy Council honored the Aces Thursday night with its annual Literacy Award for outstanding contributions toward the promotion of literacy. The Aces have been an Anchorage School District business partner since 1998, but their reading program once again drew recognition for continuing to promote literacy through the distribution of free books to area classrooms and numerous school appearances by the players themselves.
The Anchorage Aces begin play in their new, 32-team league on October 24 at Sullivan Arena when the Fresno Falcons invade Alaska in the 2003-04 season opener. Season tickets remain on saleâfor more information, please call 258-ACES [2237] or visit the team's official website at www.anchorageaces.com.
