Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have re-signed goaltender Mark Guggenberger ( GOO-gehn-burr-gurr ) for the 2013-14 season, Aces head coach Rob Murray announced today.
Guggenberger, 24, is the 12th player returning from last season's Aces team that won the Brabham Cup for the third consecutive season with the ECHL's top regular season record.
"Mark came in with something to prove last season with the challenge of playing at a new level and was exceptional for us," said Murray. "He's a competitive goaltender who has the potential to get even better. We're completely confident relying on his abilities when his name is called. It's a luxury to have a talented goaltending tandem that includes both Mark and Gerald Coleman."
The 6-foot-3, 208-pound goaltender was named to the All-ECHL Second Team last season during his first ECHL campaign. He was 25-8-5 in 39 games with the Aces, tying for fourth in wins (25), fourth in shutouts (3), fourth in save percentage (.918) and ranking third in goals against average (2.23).
"Sullivan Arena gets rocking every single night and it's a great advantage for us as a team," said Guggenberger. "Last season was huge for me and I learned a lot. Being around a great group of guys helped me grow as a player. We have a very dedicated fan base and it's a terrific thing to look forward to when suiting up for the Aces."
Guggenberger spent the 2011-12 season with the Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League and was named the league's Rookie of the Year, Most Outstanding Goaltender and a member of the All-CHL Team and All-Rookie Team. He suited up in the CHL All-Star Game and earned the win in net, part of a year where he helped the Brahmas earn a playoff berth with a 22-11-3 record, league-best 2.27 goals against average and .912 save percentage.
He tied the CHL lead with three shutouts and set the league record for longest shutout streak (238:31).
The native of Richfield, Minn. suited up with the Univ. of Prince Edward Island (CIS) in 2010-11, appearing in 15 games and was named to the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) All-Rookie Team. Previously, he fashioned a three year career in the Western Hockey League with Portland, Swift Current and Kelowna. He helped guide Kelowna to a WHL championship and Memorial Cup berth in 2008-09 and went 40-30-5 with a 2.64 goals against average and eight career shutouts in 79 career games.
Guggenberger joins Coleman on the Aces roster as the second goaltender re-signed for the upcoming campaign. The duo combined to help Alaska rank second in the ECHL for fewest goals allowed per game (2.3) last season. Aces training camp information for the 2013-14 season will be announced soon.
The Aces will begin their 2013-14 season at home on Friday, Oct. 18 at Sullivan Arena when they host the San Francisco Bulls. Season ticket and sponsorship packages are currently available through the Aces office at 15th & Gambell.
