Reno Aces News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah-Ryan Wheeler's first-inning grand slam sparked a 5-run frame and the Aces never trailed Sunday night, finishing-off the series sweep with a 9-5 victory over the Salt Lake Bees at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
Reno jumped on top early and in a big way, pushing across five runs in the first on Wheeler's first-career grand slam and a solo shot for Konrad Schmidt. Salt Lake answered with two in the home half of the first and pulled to within a run in the third, but the Bees never recovered from the early deficit.
Aces starter Zach Kroenke (2-1) picked-up the victory, scattering five runs-four earned-on eight hits over 6.2 innings of work. Kroenke walked one and struck out two. After his exit, Mike DeMark, Bryan Woodall and Sam Demel kept the Bees silent over the game's final 2.1 innings to preserve the win and the series sweep-Reno's first of the season.
The loss fell to Bees starter Eric Hurley (2-2), who surrendered five runs on six hits over 3.2 innings of work.
At the dish for Reno, Wheeler led the way with two hits and a career-high five RBIs. Randy Ruiz homered for the third time in the series and stretched his hitting streak to 12 games with a 2-for-3 night at the plate. Adam Eaton collected three hits, and Jake Elmore scored three runs.
Reno now returns home to kick-off an eight-game homestand, beginning with a four-game set against the Las Vegas 51s in the resumption of the vaunted Silver State Diamond Challenge. In Monday's opener, LHP Tom Layne (0-2, 9.00 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while RHP Tim Redding (0-2, 11.70 ERA) counters for the 51s. First pitch from Aces Ballpark is set for 6:35 p.m. PT, and Monday will be another Om-Nom-Nomday presented by KTVN Channel 2 News, with ribs available for just $1.
