Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The Prairie Dogs fell behind early and never could recover on Saturday night in San Angelo as the Colts cruised to a 10-2 victory at Foster Field.

Erik Gonsalves made his second start with Abilene and ran into immediate trouble in the bottom of the first. After Ronnie Gaines reached on an error to start the inning, Gonsalves hit a batter and allowed a single to load the bases. After Gaines scored on a wild pitch, Cory Patton and Daryl Jones both capitalized on R.B.I. opportunities with consecutive run-scoring groundouts to make it 3-0. Mark Ramos then singled through the middle to score Jamar Walton, and the Colts snatched a 4-0 advantage.

The Abilene lineup broke through against lefty starter Demetrius Banks as Zach Welch, Jason Martin, and Joe Weik slashed three consecutive two-out doubles to cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third.

Gonsalves rebounded to set down the Colts in order in the second but stumbled through the third. Patton led off the frame with his sixth home run of the season, and Ramos doubled to drive in a pair later in the innings as the Colts widened their lead to five, 7-2.

Banks marched back to the hill in the top of the fourth and continued working on what would become a stretch of 12 consecutive batters retired. The lefty was outstanding in his second start with the Colts, lasting 6 2/3 innings, yielding just two runs on six hits, and fanning eight batters on the way to his fifth win of the season.

After Gonsalves went three innings - allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits - the Dogs used four relievers. Tietze allowed three runs (two earned) while walking three over two innings, and Braden Tullis, Wade Morrison, and Kevin Gelinas tossed and innings each to keep the Colts off the board over the final three innings.

Patton went 2-for-5 with a homer and three runs driven in while Ramos knocked in a three runs in a 2-for-5 performance.

The Dogs and Colts will continue their final series of the season when the squads meet at Foster Field for a 6:05 first pitch on Sunday night. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 5:55.
