Abilene Ruff Riders News Release

ABILENE, TX. : The Abilene Ruff Riders will host the El Paso Generals on Saturday, May 23 from the Taylor County Expo Center. The Ruff Riders recently snapped their two-game losing streak with a win over Corpus Christi, 48-37, last Saturday. Abilene trailed by as much as eight points in the second half but the Ruff Riders outscored the Hammerheads, 26-14, to comeback and complete the victory. Quincy Carter compiled another solid performance with 162 passing yards and six touchdowns. For another week, the Ruff Riders defense stepped up and made big plays when they had to by registering two interceptions and producing stops in the second half.

Abilene will face El Paso for the second and final time in the regular season on Saturday. El Paso is back to work this week following a bye and in their only meeting against Abilene, the Generals defeated the Ruff Riders, 58-36, back on May 9. El Paso outscored the Ruff Riders, 31-10, in the second half as QB Tommy Jones threw for 209 yards and five total touchdowns (three rushing). The 58 point total was the highest mark the Ruff Riders defense has allowed this season.

Abilene will have to pressure QB Tommy Jones in order to contain the powerful Generals passing attack. Look for Fred Thrweatt, Willis Hogan and LB Rico Brooks to be the key players in that factor. Look for DB Joey Longoria to be a factor in the turnover battle and as he enters this weekend leading Abilene with eight interceptions this season.

El Paso is averaging close to scoring 54 points a game this season and it will be likely that Tommy Jones will continue to go to his main targets in DeAngelo Woodie and Lemans Casimier. Woodie and Casimier combined for 12 receptions for 209 yards and two touchdowns in the previous meeting against Abilene. Woodie leads the Generals with 528 receiving yards and 12 touchdown receptions. Abilene's passing attack will counter with WR Mike Carrillo, Juan Reese and Fred Howze. In Abilene's four wins this season, they have scored 30 or more points. Look for a strong running back duo from the Ruff Riders with Carlos Alsup and Bernard Payton.

El Paso's defense was able to sack Quincy Carter twice in the previous meeting however Carter did throw for over 250 yards and five touchdowns. Look for Generals DL Ron Ellington to be a key factor defensively as he leads El Paso with nine sacks this season. The end result will be based off turnovers and time of possession, but in any case expect a good offensive shoot-out between both teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and next week, the Ruff Riders remain at home to take on the Corpus Christi Hammerheads as the Generals return home to face the San Angelo Stampede Express.
