Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

June 21, 2005 - The Aberdeen IronBirds (0-1) kicked off their fourth season with some pre-game pomp and circumstance before taking the field in front of the largest crowd in franchise history (6,411). The night began with University of Maryland Men's Basketball Coach Gary Williams throwing out the ceremonial first pitch to IronBirds owner Cal Ripken, Jr. and IronBirds starter Ryan Schwabe dominating Hudson Valley with 6.1 scoreless innings of work.

The 'Birds jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Hudson Valley (1-0), thanks to back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the second by RF Nolan Reimold and 3B Matt Pulley. Aberdeen bats went cold for most of the rest of the night, as CF Zach Davis and Reimold picked up the only other two IronBird hits.

Things turned for the worse on the field after Schwabe departed, as the bullpen allowed 8 runs in 2.2 innings of work. Fresh off of Tommy John surgery, James Hoey replaced Schwabe and underwent lengthy battles against the first two hitters before walking them both on full counts. From there, he gave up several hits and suddenly the IronBirds found themselves in a 6-1 hole after 7 innings of play. Bryan Dumesnil and Don Levinski also saw time on the mound for Aberdeen, with Dumesnil throwing 1.2 innings and Levinski throwing a scoreless 9th.

Game two of the series and the 2005 season will be Wednesday night at Ripken Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Romelio Lopez will go for Hudson Valley, with Radhmaes Liz looking to even the IronBirds record on the early season.
