ABA Salutes Marine Corps' Toys for Tots

Published on December 16, 2005 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The ABA Salutes the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program. In 1947, a group of U.S. Marine Reservists collected and distributed 5000 toys to needy children of Los Angeles on Christmas eve. This pilot campaign was so successful that the U.S. Marine Corps titled it the U.S. Marine Corpos Toys for Tots Program and expanded it nationwide the following year. Walt Disney designed the original Toys for Tots poster the following year and it became the official logo for the program. The original mission of "bringing the joy of Christmas and delivering a message of hope to needy children" continues today. The purpose of the program is to issue a "call to action" to all Americans to make a positive impact on children by supporting the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Toys for Tots is a part of the Christmas season. For more information, visit www.toysfortots.org.

ABA Salute is a program designed by the league to help our military and its families. The goal is to donate money to worthy charities dedicated to bettering the lives of our troops and provide scholarships. Some of these charities include Disabled Sports USA Wounded Warriors Program, Gen. Tommy Franks' Salute American Heroes, The Fisher House, Toys for Tots and the American Legion Legacy Fund. Salute raises money through the sale of its logo brand merchandise and can be purchased at www.abasalute.com and www.abalive.com. For more information, contact jennifer@abasalute.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
