ABA announces 2004 season divisions
June 12, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Kansas City, MO. Jim Clark, ABA VP of Operations, today announced that the professional basketball league will have six divisions for the upcoming season. According to Clark, "We have constructed our divisions for growth fully expecting to add many new teams in the years to come. Our teams will play primarily within their divisions, but will have some games with adjoining divisions. The six divisions include: Northeast, Southeast, North Central, South Central, Northwest, Southwest. Later this week, we'll name the divisions after original ABA legendary players. All in all, we are very excited." Clark added, "And it is possible that we might even add a team or two this year to those listed."
Northeast: Boston, Harlem, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland.
Southeast: Jacksonville, Pensacola, Gwinnett, Nashville, Charlotte.
North Central: Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, Kansas City.
South Central: Juarez, Hermosillo, Ft. Worth, Arkansas, Oklahoma City.
Northwest: Vancouver, Portland, Utah, Reno, Fresno, Las Vegas, Vancouver.
Southwest: Tijuana, Orange County, Ontario, Long Beach, Bakersfield, Albuquerque.
Clark concluded, "The ABA has grown dramatically since last season because we've been able to put together a very exciting product. ABA basketball is fast-paced, exciting, high-scoring, interesting and unique, unlike any other basketball anywhere - and the players, needing a combination of great defensive and offensive skills and speed, are tremendous athletes. It is little wonder that the league has become so popular - and now fans in three countries - the US, Mexico and Canada - will have a chance to see why the ABA has become the "talk of the sports world."

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
