ABA and Silverados announce Unity of Nations basketball game
February 15, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
Indianapolis, IN -- The American Basketball Association announced that the Rio Grande Valley Silverados, one of the ABA's 2007 expansion teams, will play a symbolic game of basketball against the Correcaminos of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico on Saturday, March 13th at 10 am.
According to Art Gonzalez and Kevin Mitchell, co-owners of the Silverados, "We are playing this game in the spirit of unity between our two nations. The game will be held on the McAllen/Reynosa International Bridge and will utilize the international demarcation line between Mexico and the United States as the half court line. This will mark the first time in history that two professional sports teams will play a game simultaneously in two separate countries."
Gonzalez and Mitchell added, "At a time when many believe that barriers should be built between our two countries, we would like to show that unity and cooperation may be a better option. We would also like to showcase our community, one that has been a model for international brotherhood for more than a century. We believe that sports, especially basketball, can be a powerful, unifying and positive force in the lives of our people for many generations to come."
On behalf of the ABA, the RGV Silverados, Mayor Richard Cortez of McAllen Texas, Mayor Francisco Cabeza de Vaca and the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley, we cordially invite you to attend and to show your support for this historic event. Saturday. March 13th at 10 am.
