Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - York pitching held Southern Maryland to only five hits as the Revolution destroyed the Blue Crabs 12-2 in front of 3,618 patrons on Friday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.
York got things going with a four-run second thanks to RBI singles from catcher Octavio Martinez and right fielder Val Majewski in addition to a bases loaded hit-by- Pitch on second baseman Ramon Castro and a sac fly by designated hitter Jose Herrera to give the Revolution a 4-0 lead.
York added to their advantage in the third on a solo homer by first baseman Chris Nowak (6), before Southern Maryland got on the board with a sac fly by centerfielder Jeremy Owens in the third to cut the York lead to 5-1.
The Revolution got the run back in the fourth on another solo homer, this time by centerfielder Scott Grimes (12), which was followed in the bottom of the fifth by a solo shot from Southern Maryland second baseman Brandon Pinckney (4) to keep York's lead at four.
However a strong pitching effort from Revolution starter Shaun Garceau kept the Blue Crabs in check. Despite not earning the win, Garceau allowed two runs on only four hits while walking three and striking out five in 4.1 innings of work.
York put the game away with six unearned runs over the final two innings as Southern Maryland committed four errors in the process. A two-run throwing error by relief pitcher Eduardo Morlan gave the Revolution an 8-2 lead in the eighth. In the ninth, a dropped fly ball by Blue Crab right fielder Ben Harrison led to a four-run outburst as a bases loaded walk to Grimes, a fielding error by Southern Maryland relief pitcher Charlie Manning, and a two-run double by Castro finished the scoring and made the final 12-2.
York pounded out 12 hits including two apiece from Grimes, Majewski, Castro, and leftfielder James Shanks. Castro drove in three runs with a double, while Grimes went 2-4 with a homer, singles, two walks and three runs scored. Southern Maryland got a 2-4 effort from Pinckney who homered and singled.
The win went to reliever Geoff Geary (1-1) of the Revolution while Eddie Rodriguez (3-2) took the loss for the Blue Crabs. It was Rodriguez's first loss as a starter as he allowed six earned runs on nine hits in four innings of work.
The 10-run defeat was the largest loss for Southern Maryland this season.
Southern Maryland and York will face off in game two of their three-game series on Saturday with first-pitch scheduled for 6:35 at Regency Furniture Stadium. Southern Maryland will send righty Brian Slocum (3-3, 4.89 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Chris Cody (7-4, 4.96 ERA) of the Revolution. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
