West Texas Roughnecks News Release

ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks announce the signing today of an exceptional kicker along with a defensive back from the 2006 championship Roughnecks Squad.

Beginning with DB Damaro Wheeler, at 6'1" and 205 lbs., the crafty corner was a part of the 2006 Roughnecks from training camp through the championship game. He spent a majority of the season watching as he suffered an early injury that prevented him from a regular role in the line up. The California native attended college and played football at Azusa Pacific in his home state graduating in 2005. "His man-to-man coverage is remarkable and we all look forward to seeing him display these skills", stated head coach Chris Williams.

After a solid performance filling a gap for the team, local kicker Erick Hernandez has been released to make room for IFL veteran L.J. Daughtry. At 6' 2" and 187lbs, Daughtry holds second place behind only 2006 Roughnecks kicker Ezequial Averado for longest field goal when he nailed a 54 yarder versus Odessa during the play off game in 2006 while playing for Louisiana. Very comparable to Averado, L.J. possess the ability to be very accurate from deep distances. "We have spent a lot of time searching for the right player for this position and we are thrilled to have L.J. He is the best possible selection and we are confident that he will deliver good things for the team and the community", explained Williams. Daughtry is from Louisiana and played in college at Nicholls State including a match-up against Eli Manning his freshman year.

This is the second straight day of player additions for the Roughnecks and further player announcements are expected tomorrow leading up to Saturday's game versus the Katy Ruff Riders. You can call the team at (432)332-PASS (7277) for rates and information on groups and individual tickets. So get your group together and come on out for a fun, family, action packed evening at the Rough House.
