Storm to Honor Hicks and Poppinga

The Sioux Falls Storm is pleased to announce a very special halftime of the Storm's IFL game against the Bloomington Extreme this Saturday, May 7th. The halftime ceremony is to honor the careers of former standout Storm players Adam Hicks and Shannon Poppinga along with the retirement of their jerseys.

Poppinga played nine seasons for the Storm from 2001 to 2009. He led the team in interceptions three of those seasons (2005, 2006 and 2008) and also collected 369 tackles, over his career making him 2nd All Time in Tackles for the Storm. He also holds three All-Time Career Records with the Storm. The Augustana alumn is 1st All-Time in pass breakups with 103, 1st All-Time in field goal return yards with 416 and 1st All-Time field goal return touchdowns with 3. Poppinga earned four championship titles with the Storm.

In 2005, Poppinga was named to the 1st Team All-UIF team, a season that he recorded 10 interceptions giving him a single season record of 1st All Time in Interceptions.

Adam Hicks spent six seasons with the Storm from 2003-2008. He led the team in scoring five seasons. The University of South Dakota alumn holds three career records with the Storm. Hicks is 1st All-Time in field goals with 131, 1st All-Time in Field Goal Percentage with 46.6% and 1st All-Time in scoring with 816 points. Though known for his kicking prowess, Adam was also one of the best kick-off coverage kickers in the league recording an unofficial nine touchdown saving tackles in a single season.

"Poppy and Hicks both exemplify what the Sioux Falls Storm is all about," said Storm Owner, Todd Tryon. "They were true character athletes that lead by example on and off the field."

During the history of Sioux Falls Storm football there have been players that have stood out because of their vibrant playing personalities, their showmanship and their crowd pleasing antics. Shannon Poppinga and Adam Hicks are not included in that group. Rather, they played the game of football with a determined work ethic accompanied by natural and acquired skills that brought success to the team and not a spotlight to themselves.

They were the consummate "team players" who quietly amassed amazing personal statistics and accomplishments while allowing others to step into the spotlight. And finally, when they knew their careers had ended, they quietly walked away from the game they loved to give others a chance to experience what it is like to play for of the Sioux Falls Storm and their wonderful fans.
