Bears Robertson sold to Mets

NEWARK, NJ - May 10, 2006 - The contract of Newark Bears left-handed pitcher Jeriome Robertson was sold to the New York Mets earlier today. Robertson, who was scheduled to make his third start of the season Friday, May 12 vs. Atlantic City at The Den, is scheduled to start for triple-A Norfolk this evening.

Robertson, who was signed by the Bears on April 18, is entering his 11th professional season. He was originally drafted in the 24th round by the Houston Astros in 1995, and reached the major leagues in 2002 appearing in 11 games. In 2003 he started in 31 of the 32 games he appeared in, posting a 15-9 record, striking out 99 batters.

This season with the Bears, Robertson pitched 12 scoreless innings, striking out 15, in his two starts this season, receiving no decisions in both starts.

The Bears also announced today, they have signed RHP Fernando Rijo to a contract for the 2006 season, and released RHP Marc Sauer. Rijo joins the Bears for his 12th professional season after signing as a non-drafted free agent in February of 1995. In 2001 pitching for Wilmington of the single-A South Atlantic League, Rijo set career highs in wins with 11 and strikeouts with 128. He reached the triple-A level in 2003 while pitching for Ottawa of the International League, striking out 13 batters in 12 innings pitched winning two games.

The Bears will play game one of a two-game series at Campbell's field against the Camden Riversharks this evening beginning at 7:05 pm. They will send LHP Jean Carlos Granado (0-0) to the mound for his second start of the season. In his first start, Granado yielded 3 runs in 5 innings, receiving a no decision.
