Greyhounds garner seven conference all-star slots

WHEELING, WV – The National Indoor Football League announced their Conference All-Stars on Monday, July 27. The Greyhounds were awarded six Atlantic Conference all-star slots and Angel Estrada was named Defensive MVP.

Rayshawn Askew was named All-Star Running back. As well as holding the NIFLÂ’s 2004 rushing title with 215 carries for 1047 yards and 31 touchdowns, Rayshawn also had 15 receptions for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns. Askew also made his mark on special teams with 26 kick returns for 474 yards. This was RayshawnÂ’s second year as a Greyhound, coming to the team late in the 2003 season.

Curtese Poole was named All-Star Defensive lineman. His stats read like a defensive seminar. Curtese had 104 tackles with 42 of those solo. He had 17.5 tackles for a loss. His pass rush helped him put up 8 sacks, 2 interceptions, 6 pass break-ups and 1 forced fumble. Poole also had 3 blocked kicks and 1 safety. On the offensive side of the ball Curtese had 1 carry for 6 yards and 1 reception for 11 yards and a touchdown. Poole accumulated these stats in only 12 games due to an injury to his right bicep. Curtese missed the last two regular season games as well as the playoff rounds. This was PooleÂ’s second year as a Greyhound.

Joey Flora was named All-Star Cornerback with 82 tackles with 30 recorded as solos. Joey also recorded 2.5 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. He had 6 interceptions on the year and 17 pass break-ups. Joey was considered a rookie this year, joining the team for their 2003 playoff run.

Mike Blackburn, one of the original “Big Uglies” was again named to the NIFL All-Stars as an offensive lineman. Mike has been with the team since it’s inception in 2001 and has been a valuable member both on and off the field.

Ken Sandor, another of the “Big Uglies” was award All-Star status as well. This was Sandor’s second year with the Hounds, coming in to shore up the offensive line during the 2003 season when the line was hampered with injuries.

Angel Estrada, the Ohio Valley Greyhounds Rookie of the Year, was named to the NIFL All-Stars for his work as a safety and as Atlantic Conference Defensive MVP. Angel, the first Greyhound signed for the 2004 season at last years Indoor Bowl III, lived up to the staffÂ’s expectations. Playing both sides of the ball, Estrada put up impressive statistics while making his presence known in the backfield. He had 65 tackles of which 18 were solos, 3.5 tackles for a loss, 14 interceptions, 21 pass break-ups and 1 fumble recovery.

On the offensive side of the ball, Estrada was also a threat with 5 carries for 20 yards and 2 touchdowns and 20 receptions for 223 yards and 7 touchdowns. Special teams also benefited from AngelÂ’s talent. As a kick returner, Estrada ran back 8 for 138 yards and he had 181 yards and 1 touchdown from the 8 missed field goals he covered.

Making up the Atlantic Conference All-Stars are:

Fort Wayne Freedom – Rachman Crable, Defensive Lineman and Adrian Reese, Kick Returner and Special Teams MVP.

Show Me Believer – Mike Wyatt, Head Coach; Scott Pringle, Wide Receiver and Justin Peery, Quarterback and Offensive MVP.

Atlantic City Cardsharks – Eric Magrini, Wide Receiver and former Greyhound Eddie Bynes, Defensive lineman.

Houma Bayou Bucks – Kevin Heard, Wide Receiver.

Beaumont Drillers – Ron Brown, Offensive Lineman.

Evansville BlueCats – Terry Phillips, Offensive Lineman.

Tupelo FireAnts – Pig Prather, Linebacker and Eric Bingham, Cornerback.

Lexington Horsemen – William Mulder, Cornerback.

Carolina Rays/Myrtle Beach Stingrays – former Steel Valley Smash Bruce Reinecker, Kicker.
