RiverCity Rage News Release
ST. CHARLES - The old adage that it is hard to beat a team three times doesn't apply to the RiverCity Rage. The Rage waxed the Saginaw Sting for the third time this season, 60-29, at the Family Arena.
RiverCity improved to 5-1 on the season, and will host the Sioux City Bandits 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Family Arena
Receiver Maurice Avery was virtually uncoverable as he torched the Saginaw defensive backfield for 132 yards on five catches and three touchdowns. He was one of six RiverCity receivers to haul in a pass. James Dougherty added the final two scores for the Rage in the blowout. The Rage's 60-points are the most the team has scored this season.
The main distributor of the offense was Dixie Wooten, who was 15-of-20 with 209 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. His first incompletion didn't come until the second quarter and his interception was just his second on the season. Wooten has raised his season total for touchdown passes to 26 in the victory.
The Rage defense came out feisty, holding the Sting to just two field goals on their first two possessions. Saginaw amassed just 102 yards of total offense in the game. Defensively, Joe Bevis led the charge with 7.5 tackles, while University of Missouri product Darnell Terrell chipped in with 5.5 tackles.
"This was an all-around effort for our football team," said head coach Rik Richards. "We overcame some mistakes on offense and limited the big plays on defense. Saginaw was fired up coming into this game so it was great to be able to get our fifth win."
While the Sting was being relegated to field goals, RiverCity was finding pay dirt with regularity. The Rage scored six total touchdowns through the air, one on the ground, and one on special teams.
Following the first Saginaw score, running back Randy Bell answered quickly taking the ensuing kickoff back to the one yard line before fumbling into the end zone, where he recovered for the score.
Bell was solid on the ground, racking up 52-yards on eight carries and a touchdown while Vincent Webb added 18-yards on three touches.
In a rare football moment, the two teams traded safety's in the third quarter. Rage defensive lineman Terrell Washington registered his second sack and first safety of the year for RiverCity.
