Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (22-20) scored all of their runs in the second inning on Friday night at Pioneer Park, but it was enough to give them a 4-1 victory over the Johnson City Cardinals (19-20). With the win, the second-place Astros increased their lead over Cardinals to one and a half games in the Appalachian League West division.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Astros scored four runs after picking up two quick outs to start the second. It was all set up with a Hector Roa single followed by two walks by Kristian Trompiz and Jeffry Santos to load the bases. Then, Jason Martin ripped a base-clearing double, his team-leading 11th of the year, into center field to give the Astros their first three runs. Shortly thereafter, Martin scored on a wild pitch to put the Astros up 4-0.
The Astros would not score again, but it was the sixth inning before the Cardinals got on the scoreboard. With two outs, an Astros throwing error allowed Carlos Torres to head home all the way from second. Then, with the bases loaded, the Astros got Chris Rivera to fly out to end the inning without any more damage and went on to close the game out with a 4-1 victory.
Left-handed pitcher Austin Nicely, the Astros' starter, allowed one unearned run on three hits over six innings as he earned the win. Then, left-handed sidearmer Zach Davis went the next two innings, holding the Cardinals to just two hits with two strikeouts. Finally, Eric Peterson retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his third save of the year.
The Astros will take on the Cardinals in game three to decide the series on Friday at Pioneer Park. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
