Saint John Riptide News Release

In Maritime-NBL circles its known as "The Shot", and it was the painful end of the Saint John Mill Rats season in a deciding Game 5 of a playoff series with the Island Storm.

After Ricky Volcy of Saint John hit a step back jumper with under 10 seconds left to give the Mill Rats the lead, the Island Storm rushed down the court and Mike Williams jumper propelled the Storm into the Conference Finals.

"Its been a long 9 months since our season ended in dramatic fashion," said Mill Rats GM Ian McCarthy. "And we aren't playing with that game always on our mind, but its a lesson that really taught us the importance of the regular season and gaining home court advantage."

While the season is very young, the Mill Rats have come all out all business in the first 3 games with a 3-0 record, best in the NBL so far. The Island Storm are 1-2, but could easily be 2-1 having dropped a game against Halifax that they led throughout.

"The Storm have a great organization that's why they've been to the Finals twice and and are always tough competition," said Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "We have to respect all of the teams in this league no matter what the record because any team can win on any night."

The Storm are led by forward Mike Martin who is averaging 21.3 points per game, trade acquisition Brent Jennings 20.3, and Malcolm Grant 17.

The Mill Rats high scoring trio of guards include Anthony Anderson at 24.7 points per game, Doug Herring Jr 22.7, and Corey Almond 21. Gabe Freeman scores 16.7 and hauls down 10.7 rebounds per game.
