St. John's Edge News Release
Over the ten days leading up to February 23, 2020, we will highlight some of the greatest moments of Carl English's tenure with the St. John's Edge.
For the National Basketball League of Canada, and especially the St. John's Edge, it was the perfect storm. One of the country's most accomplished players coming home to play basketball in his native country and hometown.
The 2017/2018 season would prove to be yet another storied chapter in Carl English's illustrious career. English would lead the Edge to 25-15 record in their inaugural season with averages of 23.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per contest. Not only did #23 lead the team on the court he was arguably just as valuable off the hardwood as well.
Carl's passion for growing the game and serving his community is simply unmatched. Public visits to schools, community centres and charities was an almost daily event. In his open letter to English the league's Deputy Commissioner, Audley Stephenson, said, "Throughout his time in NBL Canada, Carl continually served as a pillar in the community and provided a real-life example to young kids who aspire to dream the same way he did. Carl has served as a shining example of what it means to dream, work hard for what you want and push yourself to get it. He challenges himself first and encourages those around him to do the same."
Carl English would be named Most Valuable Player by the league becoming the first Canadian to do so. He would also take home Canadian Player of the Year honours and be named a first-team all-star. It was a historic moment for the NBL Canada, the St. John's Edge and Carl English.
