P.E.I. Rocket News Release
The PEI Rocket are excited to announce many of the details of the 2nd Annual PEI Rocket Street Hockey Festival. This year, the event is supporting the Sherwood Parkdale Peewee AAA Team that will be travelling to Quebec City as the Rocket's representative at the Quebec International Peewee Tournament.
This year, the Rocket Street Hockey Festival has named former Sherwood Minor Hockey star Mark Flood, as the Honourary Chairman. Mark finished last season with the New York Islanders and is currently a free agent. "It was an honour to be asked to be involved by lending my name to this event, but this event really is all about the kids, so it is easy to lend some support", said Flood. "I would have loved to play in an event like this when I was growing up. It is really great to see the Rocket involved in this type of community activity", he added.
"We really wanted to tie in a former Sherwood Minor Hockey Player who has gone on to bigger and better things in his career", said Rocket GM, Kent Hudson. "I had the pleasure to coach against Mark quite a few years ago and have always been impressed with his hockey ability, but even more impressed with him as a fine young man. Having his name associated with this event is tremendous and we thank him for lending his name", added Hudson.
Grafton Street, between Prince Street and University Avenue will once again be closed for the downtown Street Hockey Festival during the Labour Day Long Weekend. The event will kick off on Friday, September 2nd and will run until Saturday evening. The PEI Rocket team for 2010-2011 will be announced at noon on Friday as part of the event and will be the first chance for the fans to meet the team.
The event is being called a festival because it is much more than a street hockey tournament.
. Rocket players will be available for pictures and autographs when the team is officially announced at noon on Friday, September 3 during this event.
. Every participant in the festival will be invited, and given a free ticket, to attend the PEI Rocket versus the Saint John Sea Dogs exhibition game on September 2nd!
. All Participants will receive a festival T-shirt
. Teams are guaranteed 4 games
. All participants will be eligible for a variety of Draw Prizes.
. Division winners will be recognized at centre ice during Thursday evening's PEI Rocket game (September 2nd).
There is another very interesting tie in for this year's event. Current Rocket player Josh Currie actually played on the Sherwood Peewee Team that represented the Rocket when he played in Peewee. Now, Josh's younger brother Nick will be representing the Rocket in the Quebec tournament this coming year as part of the Sherwood Parkdale Peewee AAA Falcons. Josh, pictured below in a faceoff against younger brother Nick said "the Quebec Tournament was an unbelievable experience. It is pretty cool to think that I wore the Rocket jersey in Peewee and then get the chance to wear it again now. I am proud to be a part of this organization".
