
25 Players to Enter Waiver Draft

ATLANTA (Friday, February 21, 2003) - The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) announced today the list player whose options were not exercised by their club. The 25 players are available to be selected by any team via the WUSA Waiver Draft on February, 24 at 4:00 p.m. ET.
At 5:00 p.m. ET today, each of the eight WUSA teams was required to reduce its roster to no more than 16 players and no less than 12.
The WUSA Waiver Draft will take place on Monday, February, 24 at 4:00 p.m. ET. The order will be based on each team's finish in the 2002 season. The draft will continue until all eight teams pass on their current pick. On February 25, a daily Waiver Wire will begin. It will last until all players involved in the Waiver Wire Process are either claimed or become unrestricted. Any player not selected during the Waivers Period may re-enter the league through the tryout process.

The WUSA Exercise of Option Date also witnessed a trade between the New York Power and Washington Freedom. New York traded goalkeeper Gao Hong to the Washington for future considerations. Gao, China's starting goalkeeper at World Cup '99, missed most of the 2002 WUSA season recovering > from preseason wrist surgery, playing in only four matches (0-4-0, 3.50 GAA).In 2001, Gao finished the season with a > record of 9-7-5 while finishing second in the WUSA in victories (9) and third in both shutouts (6) and save percentage (79.1).
Featuring the best women's soccer players in the world, WUSA athletes include Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Tiffeny Milbrett, Briana Scurry, Julie Foudy and dozens of international stars. The eight WUSA teams are the Atlanta Beat, Boston Breakers, Carolina Courage, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spirit, San Jose CyberRays and the Washington Freedom. The league will kick off its third season on April 5.
