2016 Weekly Draftee Update
March 25, 2016 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Florida Launch News Release
With the MLL season just over a month away, future league stars are well on their way to NCAA glory with their respective schools. The Florida Launch has its eye on 8 young laxers that were drafted in the 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft. Here you'll find the latest stats, scores, and accolades these budding stars are racking up before they take their game to the next level.
The University of North Carolina put on an offensive clinic against Richmond by defeating the Spiders 15-6. Florida's third round selection, Steve Pontrello played a huge role for the Tar Heels contributing 3 goals and collecting 3 ground balls on the day. Next up for #12 UNC and Pontrello is a high-profile away matchup with #6 Maryland and fellow Launch draftee Henry West. Maryland and West are coming off a strong 10-7 victory against Albany in which West chipped in an assist.
#2 Notre Dame won a decisive 8-7 overtime thriller against the University of Virginia on the back of the Launch's first round selection Matt Landis. The defenseman had 2 ground balls and held the Cavaliers to a scoreless overtime period. The Irish look to keep their season rolling against Ohio State and the Launch's fourth round defender Robby Haus. The Buckeyes will look to rebound this week after Haus posted 3 ground balls in the 6-15 loss to top-ranked Denver.
Early in the sixth round, the Launch scooped up what could be one of the best steals of the draft in attackman Devin Dwyer. #15 Harvard suffered a close loss to Ivy League foe Brown but that did not stop Dwyer from making history. His 2 point (1G, 1A) effort put the senior 4th in school history in points with a whopping 175. Dwyer is also enjoying a 40-game point streak and has scored a career high 21 goals this season. Next up for the Crimson is more Ivy League action against unranked Dartmouth.
Marquette did not crack the top 20 this week but still earned votes after a 11-5 win over Quinnipiac. The Launch made history selecting Liam Byrnes as the first-ever Golden Eagle drafted into the MLL, and after posting 2 ground balls and causing a turnover in his latest game, it is easy to see why the middie was taken. Next up for Byrnes is a home game with Georgetown this weekend.
Similar to Marquette, Bucknell also missed out on the top 20 this week, though still received votes after topping Boston University 18-12. With the Launch's eighth round pick Alex Spring looking to continue a career season with 10 ground balls, the Bison are on the road taking on Loyola this Saturday.
