
2014 Newport Gull Will Smith Makes MLB Debut

NEWPORT, R.I. - Former Newport Gull Will Smith made his Major League Debut on Tuesday, May 28th against the New York Mets. Smith was 2-4 with one run scored. He singled off of Steven Matz in the bottom of the second for his first Major League hit and later doubled and scored in the seventh off of Robert Gsellman.
Smith helped the Gulls capture its sixth Fay Vincent Cup in 2014 after appearing in 18 games for Newport. He led the team with a .429 average in the playoffs with a pair of doubles and two RBI during the Gulls title run.
He finished his collegiate career at Louisville with a .291 average with 70 RBI. After batting .382 in his senior season, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him with the 32nd pick of the 1st round in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Smith's debut makes him the 17th former Gull to reach the Major Leagues- the most out of the NECBL franchises.
