Brockton Rox News Release

Over the past five years you have undoubtedly become familiar with our mission statement and guiding principle: FUN IS GOOD. Perhaps no Rox player or staff member personified this philosophy better than Chris Sawyer. Although Chris spent just one summer with the Rox, his legacy is enduring. As many of you know, Chris passed away last October at the age of 24 after a brave battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Chris came to us in May of 2004 with a very rich life already underway. He was a graduate of the Class of 2000 at Brockton High School, where he played in the marching band and was a National Honor Society Member. He was a recent graduate of Syracuse University, where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity, traveled abroad and spent three seasons as Otto the Orange, one of the NCAA's best loved mascots.

Chris was the second performer to don the costume of K-O, our kangaroo mascot. His creative sketches, incredible dance routines, and gentle, friendly way with children continue to inspire and guide the talented performers who have followed in his footsteps.

In January, the Rox were asked to participate in the Massachusetts Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man of the Year campaign. With the support of the Sawyer family behind us, we realized we could find no better candidate for Massachusetts Man of the Year than Chris Sawyer.

The Man of the Year Campaign is simple. From March 21st to May 30th, every dollar we raise is a vote for Chris Sawyer as Massachusetts Man of the Year. Unlike a political campaign, you can vote for Chris as often as you want. Your generosity will fund the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and will improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

If you and your family have ever enjoyed the antics of K-O at the ballpark, at your school, or in your community, it is thanks in no small part to Chris Sawyer. I hope that you will give back generously by making an online contribution to the Chris Sawyer Man of the Year Campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by going to http://cl.exct.net/?ffcb10-fe2815727362067a731776-fe31157877620c7c741671-ff3117757562-fef91174726600-fe531d77776c057b771d.
