Seattle Sounders News Release
We would like to extend a special thank you to our 2006 season ticket holders and soccer fans around the Puget Sound for your support this past season. The Sounders were 9-3-2 at home this year and would not have been as successful as we were without your support. It was a season filled with ups and down, but there are several fantastic memories from another great year of Sounders soccer.
Here are some of the front office's favorite highlights from 2006:
Having nearly 9,000 fans at the 2006 home opener against the Minnesota Thunder!
Finishing 2006 as the second highest scoring team in the USL First Division with 42 goals in 28 games.
Battling Cardiff City FC to a 1-1 draw; Cardiff City is at the top of the table in the English League Championship with a 4-1-1 record in the early stretch of the season.
Going 9-3-2 at home this year.
The Sounders promoting the Real Madrid and D.C. United game in August that featured David Beckham in front of the largest crowd in Seattle to ever watch a soccer game - 66,830.
Cam Weaver scoring a hat trick in the 5-1 win over Virginia Beach to break and set a new mark for goals scored in a single season by a rookie - 18.
Over 10,000 fans to watch the Sounders play Mexican powerhouse Club America.
The return of Preston Burpo in an MLS uniform in the exhibition against Chivas USA.
Roger Levesque and Kevin Sakuda being the workhorses of the 2006 squad, both finished among league leaders in minutes and games played.
Going 4-2-2 against our NW rivals Portland and Vancouver to win the Cascadia Cup for the first time.
Weaver winning the 2006 USL First Division Co-Goals Scoring and Co-Scoring (points) Championships - tied with Brazilian legend and 1994 World Cup MVP Romario from Miami FC at 18 goals and three assists for 39 points.
Cuban forward Maykel Galindo returning from injury to provide some punch on offense with 4 goals and 3 assists in 9 matches - just think what he could have done over the course of a full season!
Rookie GK Chris Eylander finishing his first professional season with a winning record 11-9-3 and was among league leaders in wins (3rd - 11 wins), saves (3rd - 93 saves), shutouts (8th - 6 shutouts) and was fifth in minutes played at 2070.
A 90th minute game-winning PK by Andrew Gregor set up by Leighton O'Brien for a 2-1 win in the 2006 regular season finale over Atlanta.
From General Manager Adrian Hanauer: "We appreciate all of the support that our fans provided throughout the season. The almost 9,000 fans at our final game definitely helped lift us to a crucial win. Unfortunately, we fell one point short of a playoff spot. Next year, we will be back in the postseason and try to bring the championship trophy back to Seattle."
We hope you have some great memories of the 2006 season as well. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you in the stands for 2007. More information on 2007 season tickets and ticket packages will be available soon.
Thanks.
