Sacramento Capitals News Release
NEW YORK (November 23, 2004) â The World TeamTennis Pro League Finals will move to the West Coast for the League's 25th consecutive season next year. WTT officials announced today that Allstate Stadium at Sunrise Marketplace in Citrus Heights, Calif., home of the Sacramento Capitals, will be the site of the 2005 WTT Finals, Sept. 16-17.
The top two teams from the Western and Eastern Conferences will advance to the WTT Playoffs after the 2005 regular season, which runs July 4-24. The semifinal playoffs are set for Friday, Sept. 16, followed by the WTT Finals on Saturday, Sept. 17. This will be the third time the WTT Finals will take place in Sacramento. For the past five years, the WTT Finals have been staged prior to the U.S. Open at the USTA National Tennis Center.
"This is our showcase event and we felt it was important to bring it back to a team market this season," said Ilana Kloss, WTT CEO/Commissioner. "Sacramento has always been one of our strongest markets and they have some of the best tennis fans in the U.S. We're looking forward to a great event there."
Kloss added that WTT is also planning to have a presence at the USTA National Tennis Center before or during the U.S. Open to celebrate WTT's 25th anniversary. "Our experience with the USTA and the U.S. Open has always been a terrific one and we will continue to work with them on ways to showcase WTT there."
The Sacramento Capitals are one of the oldest and most successful franchises in the 10- team WTT Pro League, having captured the WTT Championship a record five times. They hosted the WTT Finals for two years starting in 1998 when Lindsay Davenport helped the Capitals win their second consecutive King Trophy. Since moving to the temporary stadium in the parking lot of Sunrise Mall, the Capitals have routinely played to packed stands and enthusiastic crowds.
Capitals owner Lonnie Nielson is looking forward to the opportunity for his team to battle for another WTT title in front of a boisterous home crowd. "We always start the season with one goal in mind, winning the King Trophy," said Nielson. "If we take care of business on court during the regular season, we'll be able to play in front of the best tennis fans for the League championship. That's a great incentive for our staff and team so we can't wait to get the season started."
