2004 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Results

May 1, 2004 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release

The Ontario Hockey League conducted the 2004 OHL Priority Selection on the Internet today from Toronto. The Belleville Bulls selected first overall, followed by the Saginaw Spirit and Peterborough Petes. Teams selected in inverse order of the final regular season standings with non- playoff teams selecting before playoff teams.

The Belleville Bulls used the first pick to select John Hughes from the Whitby Wildcats. The 5'11", 165 lbs. centre who scored 66 goals in 56 games this season and helped Whitby win the bronze medal at the OHL Cup in March.

The Saginaw Spirit selected defenceman Matthew Corrente with the second overall pick. It's the second straight year that the Spirit used their top pick on a blueliner after selecting Patrick McNeill first overall one year ago. Corrente had four goals and 14 points in 42 games in Vaughan Jr. A last season.

The Peterborough Petes used the third pick to select Jordan Staal from the Thunder Bay Kings. Staal is the younger brother of former Petes star Eric, the first overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and Marc, the first round pick of the Sudbury Wolves from last year.

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds selected centre Ryan McInerney from Milton Jr. A with the fourth pick before the Sudbury Wolves selected Ryan McDonough fifth overall.

A total of 300 players were selected today, including 16 from the Richmond Hill Stars of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association. The Thunder Bay Kings were also well represented with 10 players selected. Nine players were selected from the York Simcoe Express, who defeated Richmond Hill in the final of the OHL Cup Showcase Tournament in March.

In addition to Staal, several other players selected today have family ties in the Ontario Hockey League, including Windsor Spitfires first round pick Corey McGillis, whose brother Brock was a goaltender with the Sault Greyhounds and Spitfires.

The grandsons of two former NHL greats were also selected today. Blake Geoffrion (grandson of Montreal Canadiens Hall of Famer Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion) was selected by the Brampton Battalion in the second round and Todd Jackson (grandson of Bep Guidolin) was selected by the Owen Sound Attack in the fifth round.

Through the 15 round process, 228 players were selected from the minor midget category while 44 were selected from junior, 15 from midget and 13 from U.S. high schools.

The OHL, in association with Internet Light and Power, a Toronto-based Internet service provider, developed a custom application to facilitate the Internet draft process for the fourth consecutive year. Fans and media were able to follow the Priority Selection in real time on the OHL's official web site – www.ontariohockeyleague.com and through a special live audio show through the Web site.

------------------ Draft Day Quotes ------------------

John Hughes (1st overall, Belleville Bulls)
"This is a dream come true. I couldn't ask for anything more. I'm looking forward to playing with the Bulls. It's going to be great."

Brad Vaughan (General Manager, Belleville Bulls)
"We watched John closely all year and his skill level is unparalleled in this year's draft. There were certainly lots of players that warranted the first pick, but we watched John and he continued to prove that he belonged in the number one slot."

Ryan McInerney (4th overall, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds)
"It's exciting to be drafted so high to an organization that's highly touted and has great fans. I was pretty excited to see my name come up so high."

Ryan McDonough (5th overall, Sudbury Wolves)
"It's a great organization. I've heard so much about it. I can score goals - that's what I do best."

Corey McGillis (7th overall, Windsor Spitfires)
"I'm just ecstatic. It's a great organization. My brother played there, so it's a good fit. I had a really good season this year. I improved a lot and proved a lot of things to myself this season. It's going to be a faster pace, but I think I'm ready for it. I want to be able to step in right away and contribute. It's going to be a really good fit - I'm their kind of hockey player."

Justin Azevedo (14th overall, Kitchener Rangers)
"It's awesome - what a great honour. I'm looking forward to joining that organization. It will be a lot faster - so I'll have to adjust to that. I was very nervous this morning - I didn't know what was going to happen. I actually got up a 7 o'clock this morning."
