2 More Rookies Get Their Halos
July 31, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release
SAN ANGELO â The San Angelo Saints today announced the signing of two rookie defensemen, bringing their total number of players signed for the 2003-04 season to 14, more than any other team in the CHL.
John Jarram joins the Saints for his first professional season after playing three seasons of Jr. hockey in the Ontario Hockey League, considered the best developmental league in Canada for young prospective pro players. He also played one season of college hockey at Wilfrid Laurier University and helped lead the Golden Hawks to the Mid-West Division Finals. At 6-1 and 210 pounds, the native of Kitchener, Ontario also brings even more size to the Saints' defensive corps. His career stats are listed below.
"John is a big, strong kid who should transition well from the OHL to the CHL," said Saints head coach Ray Edwards. "Despite his rookie status, John brings size and good experience with him to San Angelo."
The Saints have also delved back into the pool of young talent coming out of Lake Superior State University to sign rookie defenseman Kevin Wilson to the roster. Another young player with good size (6-0, 190 lbs), Wilson played college hockey with current Saints players Matt Frick and Trevor Weisgerber. His career stats are listed below.
"We signed Kevin on a strong recommendation from Trevor," said Edwards. "Like Trevor, he got a little disillusioned with the college game. But, if he can develop in the same way, he should be another young player we can build on for this season and the future."
The CHL mandates that each team carry at least three rookies on their roster at all times. With Jarram and Wilson, the Saints now have five rookies signed for the upcoming season and may pick up a couple more before recruiting is finished.
"We are going to have a younger team than San Angelo has seen before," added Edwards. "Laredo proved last season that you can have a strong team and build for the future of your franchise at the same time if you recruit good young players, and that is what we are doing this season."
Jarram and Wilson join Konrad Brand, Derek Booth, Corri Moffat and Matt Frick on the Saints defensive unit. The Saints open the 2003-04 season with exhibition games Oct. 10th (home) and 11th (away) against Odessa. The team's home opener is Oct. 18th against Rio Grande Valley. Season tickets and multi-game ticket and voucher packs are available at the team offices at 3111 Knickerbocker Road and at the San Angelo Convention Center.
