
160 Nominations Received for Flint Firebirds Foundation Teacher of the Year Award

FLINT, Mich. - The Flint Firebirds announced on Monday that the team has received 160 nominations from local students for its second annual Flint Firebirds Foundation Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by Sovita Credit Union and the Michigan Education Association. The nominees have been categorized and voting is now open to the public for the recipient of the awards in both the Elementary and Secondary Education categories.
"The Firebirds are extremely proud to be able to recognize the fantastic educators in our community with our annual Flint Firebirds Foundation Teacher of the Year Award," Firebirds President Jeremy Torrey said. "This is a group that tirelessly works to help mold the next generation and deserves recognition for that tremendous impact. We are committed to highlighting the importance of education and of the educators who help drive our community forward."
160 nominations for a total of 89 teachers were received during the nomination process, which took place from February 12 to February 26. The Firebirds have opened voting to the public and will keep the vote open until Monday, March 11 at 6 p.m. Fans can vote.
"The MEA is proud to sponsor an event that celebrates educators across the area and is pleased to see the number of submissions that honor teachers from all across mid-Michigan," Michigan Education Association UniServ Director Eric Kennedy said. "Seeing positive messages from the community that honor their local educators is uplifting and hopeful as we are all stakeholders in ensuring the best for our children."
There are 46 teachers up for Elementary Education Teacher of the Year and 43 for Secondary Education Teacher of the year. Carman-Ainsworth Community School District received the most nominations for the Elementary category with 20. Westwood Heights Schools led the Secondary category with 32 nominations.
Hamady Middle/High School has 11 different teachers nominated to lead the Secondary category. Dryden Elementary School has three different teachers nominated, pacing the Elementary category.

For over 90 years we have partnered with our members to support them and join with them to advance the well-being of the broader community. We are so proud that our community nominated 89 local teachers for a chance to be teacher of the year. We couldn't be more grateful for the incredible efforts of teachers, and all school employees, and the impact they have on students and our community."
The winner of each award will be recognized during a special pre-game ceremony prior to the game at Education Appreciation Night, also sponsored by Sovita Credit Union and the Michigan Education Association on Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m. against the Windsor Spitfires.
