Anderson Joes News Release
The Joes have played many unique games -- both good and bad -- this season, but Wednesday night's may top them all.
Anderson scored 16 runs in the first four innings, withstood a late Bradenton barrage, and beat the Juice for the third time in a row, this time 16-13 at Anderson Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.
The teams combined for a league-record 29 runs in one game, while the Joes set team records for runs and RBI (15) in one game, as well as tying team records for hits (17) and stolen bases (5).
Yet the game wasn't without its fair share of scares for Anderson (17-16, 30-48 overall), which can now boast an above-.500 record for the first time since the Joes were 1-0 after opening night May 18.
Anderson led Bradenton (17-15, 41-35) 9-0 after three innings and then 16-4 after four innings. But the Juice sent 12 batters to the plate in the seventh inning, scoring nine runs to trim the Joes lead to three.
Luckily for Anderson, the deluge of runs stopped there, as the Joes held on to the win with regular starting pitcher Dallas Mahan entering in the ninth inning for the save, his first of the year.
"It was kinda stressful," Joes first baseman Richard Quihuis-Bell said. "It was a great night for the offense, but it was definitely stressful in the later innings."
Anderson scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, four in the third and seven in the fourth to jump out to the early advantage. Starting pitcher Ronald Ball faced control issues all night, though, allowing a season-high eight walks. Still, Ball earned the win to improve to 3-3, despite allowing 11 runs, eight walks and seven hits in 6.2 innings.
Bradenton starter Rocky Collis took the loss, dropping to 3-7 after giving up nine runs and 10 hits in three innings.
Anderson received a monstrous night from Quihuis-Bell, who went 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs and five RBI, tying the team record for most RBI by one player in a game.
The Joes had seven different runners score at least twice and seven hitters combine for the record 15 RBI, highlight by Quihuis-Bell's five and complemented by three each from Brandon Carter and Rafael Alvarez.
After losing 11 straight contests to Bradenton, Anderson has now rattled off three wins in a row against its former tormentors, taking the streak into a three-game series at Charlotte County. It's Anderson's third three-game winning streak this year, and a win Thursday would equal the longest winning streak for the Joes this season.
Also, with a South Georgia loss Wednesday, Anderson moved four games out of first place with 12 games left to play.
"These kinds of games," Quihuis-Bell said, "they're just crazy."
