San Diego Sockers News Release
DEL MAR--Eduardo Velez scored a hat trick and team captain Aaron Susi added a goal with two assists as the San Diego Sockers completed the first perfect regular season in Professional Arena Soccer League history with a 9-4 victory over the Tacoma Stars at the Del Mar Arena. A crowd of 2,123 saw the Sockers (16-0) score six straight goals in the second and third quarters to put away their 34th consecutive victory, passing the 1971-1972 Los Angeles Lakers for the second longest win streak in United States professional sports history.
"We don't play for our streak, we play to win championships," said Susi, "The (winning) streak is great but we want to be on our game in two weeks when playoffs start."
Tacoma (3-11) took advantage of the fact the Sockers were road-weary from a game in Turlock the night before, coming out in a six attackers formation which confused the San Diego attack for the game's first 20 minutes. Back-to-back goals by Velez late in the second quarter forced the Stars to come out of their possession shell and the Sockers were never threatened again.
"We had a tough 24 hours and our legs were a bit heavy at first," said midfielder Anthony Medina, who recorded his eighth goal of the season, "We made some adjustments and eventually were able to counter their (six attackers) strategy."
Forward Kraig Chiles (SDSU) scored a power play goal with an assist for the Sockers, finishing his record-setting regular season with 46 goals and 66 points. Brian Farber, Ze Roberto and Nate Hetherington also scored for San Diego, while Tacoma was led by Mark Lee's hat trick. Riley Swift returned to goal for the Sockers, finishing his regular season with a 10-0 record.
The Sockers now prepare for the Ron Newman Cup playoffs, which will take place at the Del Mar Arena on March 9th and 10th. The Sockers will be the top seed from the West, with the remaining three spots to be determined by first round play-in games.
