Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER â Two days after being added to the West Division All-Star team Mammoth defenseman Jay Jalbert showed exactly why he was selected to represent the Colorado Mammoth in the National Lacrosse League's midseason showcase.
Jalbert was a force at both ends of the floor and led all scorers with four goals to lift the Mammoth to a 14-8 victory over the San Jose Stealth on Thursday night at Pepsi Center. His second goal of the night, which put Colorado up 9-5 early in the third quarter, stood as the game-winner. It was the second time in six days that the Mammoth buried the Stealth with 14 goals, after winning 14-6 at the HP Pavilion last Friday.
Jalbert, who will fill in for Arizona's injured Scott Self at the NLL All-Star Game, joins teammates Pat Coyle, Gary Gait, Gee Nash and Gavin Prout at the event on Saturday in Calgary, Alberta. The All-Star Game starts at noon Mountain time and will be televised live by NBC.
The win lifts Colorado (5-3) into a tie with Calgary (5-3) for first place in the West at the season's halfway mark. San Jose (3-5) remains in fourth place behind Arizona (4-4).
Mammoth forward Dan Stroup added three goals â his third game this season with three or more scores â and leads the team with 20 goals. In his first appearance at Pepsi Center this season forward Brian Langtry scored two goals in typical acrobatic fashion. Langtry's second, which put Colorado up 12-8 and buried any threat of a late San Jose rally, came after the shifty forward made a move in midair to put his shot past San Jose goaltender Rob Blasdell. Langtry had been a healthy scratch in the Mammoth's previous four home games this year.
Gait, Prout, Nick Carlson, Chris Prat and Josh Sims each added one goal for the Mammoth. Nash was stellar in the Colorado goal, frustrating the Stealth for the second straight game. He earned his fifth win of the season with 51 saves, including two breakaway stops.
Mammoth defender Jamie Hanford, the NLL's top faceoff man, was ejected after being assessed consecutive five-minute major penalties in the second quarter. Hanford and Jalbert set the tone for the feisty game by fighting Stealth players shortly after the opening faceoff. Hanford then went toe-to-toe with Spencer Martin in the second quarter, delighting the crowd of 16,249 when the two removed their helmets before engaging one another in the most vicious fight of the Mammoth's season so far.
Blasdell took the loss in net for San Jose with 39 saves. Cam Sedgwick led the Stealth with three goals while Gary Rosyski and rookie Ryan Boyle both tallied four points on one goal and three assists.
Jalbert, who now leads all NLL defenseman with 12 goals, put Colorado up 6-2 in the second quarter with a slick move around two Stealth defenders. San Jose answered with three straight goals to cut to the lead to one, but Stroup countered with the first half's best highlight. Stroup jumped to snag a pass from Scott Stapleford, moved across the low slot and shoveled a backhand shot past Blasdell to put the Mammoth up 7-5 at halftime.
Sims' goal came on the Mammoth's first-ever penalty shot at Pepsi Center. With two Stealth players serving penalties in the first quarter Sims was awarded the free breakaway chance after a third San Jose penalty was assessed.
