Memphis Xplorers News Release

SOUTHAVEN --- Memphis Xplorers Head Equipment Manager Al Cerbe left the team this week to take a training camp internship with the NFL Baltimore Ravens. The 20 year old Cerbe is in his second season with the Xplorers and his first as Head Equipment Manager.

"This is a great opportunity," Cerbe said. "I am going to go up there and work hard to prove myself at the highest level of pro football."

As an Equipment Manager Intern, the Horn Lake, MS native will be assigned a position and will help the Ravens equipment staff with normal equipment duties during training camp sessions. Ravens players are scheduled to report to camp at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD on Thursday with camp opening on Monday, July 31. Cerbe arrived there on Monday.

"A lot of people don't get an opportunity like this to get their foot in the door of the NFL," Cerbe said. "God is just blessing me and rewarding me for using the abilities he has given me."

During home preseason games at M & T Stadium in Baltimore, Cerbe will have the responsibility of running footballs for the officials. He is also going to have the opportunity to travel with the Ravens to their road preseason game at Minnesota on August 25. For that game, he will be handling the coaches' headsets.

This opportunity came about through former Xplorers Equipment Manager Brandon Sykes. Sykes took a similar internship with the Ravens in 2004 and befriended the team's Assistant Equipment Manager Darin Kerns. Kerns was in need of an intern for this year's training camp when one dropped out and Sykes recommended Cerbe.

Sykes, in fact, is back serving as Equipment Manager with the Xplorers for the playoffs in Cerbe's absence. After his internship with the Ravens, Sykes was the Head Equipment Manager for the Philadelphia Soul of the AFL in 2005.

Cerbe, who will be at Raven's camp through August 26, will join the student equipment staff for the University of Memphis football team when he returns. Cerbe has transferred to Memphis after attending Northeast Mississippi Community College the last two years. He also served as an equipment manager at Northeast.

Besides his Equipment manager duties with the Xplorers this season, Cerbe was also the Team Chaplain.

The Xplorers are on the bye week this week and will host a yet to be determined opponent in the first round of the playoffs on August 5 at the DeSoto Civic Center at 7 p.m.
