SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The defending NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors (12-20) were defeated by the Reno Bighorns (21-10) 129-123 on Tuesday night.
Santa Cruz's Aaron Craft recorded a double-double, tallying 26 points and 12 assists, while Verdell Jones III scored 24 points. Terrence Drisdom finished with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.
David Stockton led the Bighorns with 30 points, 9 assists, and 4 steals. Ricky Ledo scored 26 points, while Chad Toppert added 19 points in the victory over the Warriors.
The first quarter would see a tightly-contested battle for control of the game, complete with 5 lead changes and two ties. Reno would pull away to lead by as many as 10 points at the 2:24 mark, but Santa Cruz would chip away at the deficit to enter the second frame trailing by 6 points.
Despite forcing 12 turnovers and outshooting the Bighorns 48%-42% in the first half, the Warriors were unable to eclipse the Reno lead. The Bighorns would begin to pull away in the second quarter, extending its advantage to as many as thirteen points and owning a 12-point edge heading into the lockeroom.
Though Aaron Craft would score 15 points in the third frame, Reno would claim its largest lead, extending its distance from Santa Cruz by as many as 16 points.
A late rally and three-point play from Aaron Craft would put the Warriors within four points of Reno with 12 seconds to play in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the Bighorns' lead.
The Santa Cruz Warriors head to Los Angeles to take on the LA D-Fenders at 7:30 p.m. PST on Feb. 18. Fans can watch the game on the NBA D-League's YouTube channel, via www.santacruzbasketball.com.
