Sioux Falls Storm News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Storm move to 9-1 on the season after winning a nail-biting game 66-58 over the Wichita Falls Nighthawks on May 6th at Kay Yeager Coliseum.
Wichita Falls started off the game with a bang, with a deep touchdown pass from Shavodrick Beaver. The Storm's first drive of the game started ugly when Lorenzo Brown's fumble was recovered in the Storms own end zone for a touchdown by the Nighthawks to take a 0-14 lead. However, the Storm would strike back with a three-yard run by Brandon Johnson-Farrell to put the game at 6-14. The Nighthawks would then drive down the field and score a touchdown pass from Beaver to Jordan Jolly to lengthen the score to 6-20 after a Tyler Knight blocked the extra point after. The Storm then responded near the end of the first quarter with Johnson-Farrell finding the end zone for the second time in the quarter with a four-yard rush to tighten the game to 12-20.
The Nighthawks started the second quarter as they did in the first, with a one-yard touchdown run to make it a 12-27 game. But the Storm responded in a huge way on the next drive with a deep touchdown catch by Mike Tatum to close the score to 18-27. Edward Wesley would then plunge the ball in for the Nighthawks to make it a 18-34 ball game. Sioux Falls would take advantage of a short field, by quickly scoring on a deep pass to Tatum once again on the drive after to get the score to 25-34. The Storm then fumbled and Wichita Falls took advantage with a Wesley rushing touchdown to take the score back up to 25-41. But the Storm would strike back as Brown would keep the ball for a three-yard touchdown to put the score at 32-41. The Nighthawks would get a quick field goal to get the score to 32-44 at halftime.
The Storm would start the second half with an exclamation point when Mike Tatum found the end zone for a third time with a 10-yard reception to cut the score to 39-44. The defense would simmer down with a forced fumble by Brandon Peguese and a Claude Davis recovery. Sioux Falls would take advantage with a Johnson-Farrell rushing touchdown to take their first lead of the game shortly after putting the score at 45-44. The defense would come up big again when Bryan Keys picked off a deflected pass. Johnson-Farrell would meet the end zone for a third time shortly after to extend the lead to 52-44. The Storm defense would force its third turnover in a row off of a pick-six by Carlton Watkins to push the lead to 59-44. The Nighthawks would then end their third quarter score drought with a touchdown reception by Ja-Mes Logan to close the score to 59-51.
However, the Storm would keep the offense rolling with a 20-yard touchdown run by Lorenzo Brown to put the score up to 66-51 to end the third quarter. The Nighthawks would eventually respond with a 15-yard touchdown strike to Tyron Laughinghouse to cut the lead to 66-58. Despite turning the ball over twice in the last minute, the Storm hold the Nighthawks and force a turnover over on downs to seal the deal with a narrow 66-58 victory.
The Storm will face the Spokane Empire on Saturday, May 14th in Sioux Falls. The game will kick off at 7:05 pm.
