Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel announced Tuesday that they have acquired defenseman Trevor Hamilton and a 3rd Round selection in the 2016 USHL Phase I Draft via trade from the Muskegon Lumberjacks in exchange for defenseman Grant Gabriele, forward Lucas Michaud, affiliate list defenseman Kenny Johnson and a 2016 USHL Phase I Draft 5th Round pick. Hamilton, a Penn State University commit who previously played for Miami (Ohio) University, joins the Steel after serving as captain for the Lumberjacks since the start of the 2015-2016 USHL season.
Hamilton, 20, brings a wealth of USHL and NCAA experience to the Steel. The 6-0, 190-pound defenseman began his USHL career with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, skating with Team USA's U17 team in 2011-2012 and the U18 team in 2012-2013.
Hamilton played just over one season of Division I hockey for Miami (Ohio) University (NCHC), skating in a total of 31 games for the RedHawks from 2013-2014 while registering five assists and a +4 rating. The Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Native returned to the USHL last season, helping Muskegon to an Eastern Conference Championship and an appearance in the Clark Cup Final.
This season, Hamilton has skated in 32 games for Muskegon, scoring six goals and adding 19 assists. The right-shot blueliner was named CCM/USHL Defenseman of the Week on Dec. 8, 2015. He is slated to join the Penn State Nittany Lions (Big Ten) in 2016-2017.
In exchange for Hamilton, the Lumberjacks receive defenseman Grant Gabriele, forward Lucas Michaud and affiliate list defenseman Kenny Johnson. Gabriele, 18, appeared in 32 games this season with the Steel after being acquired in an Oct. 13 trade with the Omaha Lancers, tallying three goals and eight assists. Michaud, 18, first appeared for the Steel at the 2015 Junior Club World Cup in Yekaterinburg, Russia, before appearing in 36 games this season as a USHL rookie with Chicago, recording four goals and five assists. Johnson, 17, was selected by Chicago in the 6th Round of the 2014 USHL Futures Draft and currently plays midget prep hockey for Shattuck-St. Mary's (Faribault, Minn.).
Hamilton is expected to be in uniform this weekend when the Steel host a pair of Eastern Conference showdowns at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Chicago hosts the Madison Capitols on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a visit from the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena, by phone at 855-51-STEEL or online at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
