Squirrels Lively as Baysox Fall

Bowie Baysox News Release

RICHMOND, Va. - The Bowie Baysox lost 5-2 to Richmond Saturday night as the Flying Squirrels halted the Baysox momentum after taking the series' first two games. Richmond starter Clayton Tanner pitched well, with five hits in 7.1 innings as the Baysox scored two runs, and Mitch Lively notched his first save of the year for the Squirrels with 1.2 perfect innings.

Baysox lefty Rick Zagone took his first Double-A defeat to fall to 1-1 after giving up four runs on nine hits, including a pair of triples, through 7.0 innings.

He retired the first six batters he faced in the ballgame, but ran into trouble in the third inning. Shortstop Ryan Lormand led off the inning with a single to center, scoring an out later on Clay Timpner's triple to center field. Speedy outfielder Darren Ford grounded out to Ryan Adams at second base as Timpner scored to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

The fourth inning had a similar feel, as Zagone let the leadoff runner, third baseman Conor Gillaspie, on base with a single to left field. Designated hitter Brad Boyer sent him across the plate with a triple to right field and scored on Lormand's sacrifice fly as the Squirrels went up 4-0.

Tanner did well to stifle the Baysox, whose five hits were scattered across five players. The Baysox finally broke the shutout in the seventh inning. Outfielder Joel Guzman hit a one-out single to left field, and moved to second as third baseman Brandon Waring drew a walk. Catcher Caleb Joseph sent Guzman home with a single up the middle of the diamond, as the Baysox reduced the deficit to 4-1.

Bowie shaved another run off the Richmond lead in the eighth, as shortstop Carlos Rojas led off with a double to left field. Adams put runners on the corners after his single to center field, as the Squirrels pulled Tanner in favor of Lively on the mound. Lively threw a wild pitch to Tyler Henson, allowing Rojas to score and make it a two-run ballgame.

Wary of a late Baysox rally like the ones that sunk the Squirrels on Thursday and Friday, Richmond tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Baysox reliever Sean Gleason marked his return to Double-A by walking the first batter he faced, in Boyer, who was thrown out at second base after Lormand's failed sacrifice bunt attempt. Lormand moved to second on catcher Tyler LaTorre's infield single, and scored when Ford singled to left-center field, putting the Baysox in a 5-2 deficit with three outs to work with.

Lively slammed the door on the Baysox, retiring the side in order to ensure that there would be no late heroics from Bowie.

The Baysox fall to 50-44 on the season but remain in second place in the six-team Western Division, 8.0 games behind league leaders Altoona, and a game and a half above third-place Akron.

The Baysox can win the series against Richmond with a victory in the series finale at 5:05 p.m. Sunday. They return to Bowie for a seven-game home stand against Binghamton and Richmond that begins at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, July 19. That Monday game against Binghamton is the Baysox second annual Mustache Mania, where fans can show their 'stache to save some cash; fans sporting a moustache -- natural, drawn or taped on -- can get a half-priced lower reserved ticket at the box office. Saturday, July 24 is Star Wars Night, one of the most eagerly anticipated events at the ballpark this season, with lightsaber battles between innings by reenactors in authentic replica Star Wars costumes.
